Overview

Greenwich Mall (ТРЦ «Гринвич») is a major shopping and entertainment complex located in the historic center of Yekaterinburg, Russia. It occupies a block bounded by Radishcheva, 8 Marta, and Kuibysheva streets, with separate entrances from each. The complex is the largest shopping center in Yekaterinburg by area, with a total retail area of 265,000 m² as of 2023. It is owned and operated by the real estate agency Malysheva 73, founded by Igor Zavodovsky and Konstantin Pogrebinsky. The history of the site dates back to 1972, when the first self-service supermarket in the city opened at 8 Marta Street, later renamed "Maria" in the early 1990s. In 2000, the building was purchased by Malysheva 73, and in 2001 a round-the-clock supermarket "Kupets" opened. The first phase of the current shopping center was built in 2004, with subsequent phases added in 2006, 2009–2014, and 2014–2017. The complex was connected to the Geologicheskaya metro station via a series of tunnels and passages in 2019. In 2021, the Estory food market opened on the fourth floor. The mall has received several awards, including the Commercial Real Estate Awards in 2010 and the first AAA classification from the Russian Council of Shopping Centers in 2011. In 2025, the mall was temporarily closed for 10 days due to safety violations. Greenwich Mall hosts a wide range of international and Russian brands across fashion, electronics, home goods, and entertainment, including a cinema, food court, and various services. It remains a key retail destination in the Ural region.

History

The site of Greenwich Mall has been a retail location since 1972, when the first self-service supermarket in Sverdlovsk (now Yekaterinburg) opened at 8 Marta Street, later renamed "Maria" in the early 1990s. By the late 1990s, financial difficulties led the owners to sell the building. In 2000, the real estate agency Malysheva 73, founded by Igor Zavodovsky and Konstantin Pogrebinsky, purchased the building for an estimated $1.6 million. On August 18, 2001, a round-the-clock supermarket "Kupets" opened, becoming the largest in the city. The owners then negotiated with the mayor to build a shopping center on the corner of Radishcheva and Vainera streets, where an unfinished Soviet-era department store foundation existed. After property disputes, the territory was allocated to Malysheva 73. The first trading galleries, the first phase of the future mall, were built in 2004 with an area of 20,500 m². In February 2005, Malysheva 73 presented a model of the third phase at the Moscow exhibition "Mall-2005." The second phase, with an area of 25,300 m², opened in April 2006. Anchor tenants included the Kupets supermarket, the Sphere media market, the Tekhnosila electronics store, and the Titanic-Cinema multiplex. In 2009–2014, the third and fourth phases were completed, increasing the total area to 220,000 m². On March 30, 2011, the first Stockmann department store in Yekaterinburg opened in Greenwich Mall. From 2014 to 2019, a separate entrance to the Geologicheskaya metro station was built at the owners' expense, connecting the station and the mall with a series of vestibules and passages equipped with 11 escalators totaling 550 meters. In summer 2019, the facilities were transferred to the metro's balance sheet, with construction costs amounting to 815 million rubles. In 2014–2017, the fifth phase was completed, and the first and second phases were reconstructed, increasing the total area to 265,000 m². In 2021, the Estory food market opened on the fourth floor, covering 5,000 m² and accommodating 1,100 visitors. As of 2023, Greenwich Mall is the largest shopping center in Yekaterinburg. From June 30 to July 10, 2025, the mall was closed by court decision due to violations of anti-terrorism and fire safety requirements.
