Overview
The Gregor Louisoder Umweltstiftung (GLUS) is a private, non-profit foundation headquartered in Munich, Germany. It was established in 1995 from the estate of the textile entrepreneur Gregor Louisoder, and was founded by his widow Martha Louisoder together with his son Bernd Louisoder (1937–2019). The foundation is dedicated to the "protection and restoration of the natural foundations of life for humans, animals and plants" and supports a comprehensive, future-proof approach to nature and environmental conservation. Its founder's motto, "Natur- und Umweltschutz ist Menschenschutz auf Dauer" (nature and environmental protection is human protection in the long term), encapsulates its mission. The foundation does not conduct active fundraising, and it explicitly refrains from donation drives or membership recruitment. Instead, it uses its endowment to implement selected projects itself, often in close cooperation with established actors such as nature conservation associations and project offices. Its work spans regional and supra-regional classical nature and species conservation, ecologically compatible agriculture, combating wildlife crime, climate protection, and environmental education through film production. Since 2019, it has run the joint project "Tatort Natur" with the Bavarian regional branch of the Nature and Biodiversity Conservation Union (LBV) to address nature conservation crime. The foundation was also one of the driving forces behind the successful Bavarian referendum "Volksbegehren Artenvielfalt" (species diversity referendum). As of the end of 2018, the foundation's endowment was reported at just over 24 million euros. It is a member of the German Nature Conservation Ring (Deutscher Naturschutzring). Since 2003, it has awarded an annual "Förderpreis Wissenschaft" (Science Sponsorship Award) of 2,500 euros, plus an additional 2,500 euros to support continued research, to early-career scientists working in forestry, agricultural sciences, nature conservation, and the green economy. The foundation maintains a small office in Munich and works with a wide network of project partners, including NABU, WWF Germany, the Zoological Society Frankfurt, Whale and Dolphin Conservation, and local Munich groups such as Bund Naturschutz München, LBV München, Green City e.V., and the Umweltinstitut München.
History
The Gregor Louisoder Umweltstiftung was founded in 1995, emerging from the estate of the textile entrepreneur Gregor Louisoder. It was established by his widow, Martha Louisoder, and his son, Bernd Louisoder (1937–2019). Bernd Louisoder was the fourth child of Gregor Louisoder and Charlotte Berta (née Hecker). After studying business administration and earning a diploma, he owned the Munich men's clothing firm Otto Hierneis from 1970 to 1991. His commitment to environmental protection led him to the Munich district group of the Bund Naturschutz in the mid-1990s, where he served as first chair from 1996 to 2002. He remained on the board and was actively involved in the Gregor Louisoder Umweltstiftung, initially as chair of the board and, from 2003, as chair of the foundation council. The foundation is a private, non-profit organization based in Munich. It is dedicated to the "protection and restoration of the natural foundations of life for humans, animals and plants" and supports a comprehensive, future-proof approach to nature and environmental conservation. The foundation was also one of the driving forces behind the successful Bavarian referendum "Volksbegehren Artenvielfalt" (species diversity referendum). It produces films for environmental education and nature and species conservation.
