History

Greif gets its name from a family who built a packaging business that would grow into Greif Inc. The name Greif rhymes with life and is pronounced "gryfe." In 1877, William Greif and Albert Vanderwyst opened a cooperage shop, "Vanderwyst and Greif," in Cleveland, Ohio. In 1923, the first bitumen steel drum was produced, which is still part of the product portfolio today. In 1955, Greif transitioned from key and barrel heading, and stave mills and cooperage facilities to manufacturing fibre drums and corrugated containers. In 1978, Greif officially entered the containerboard manufacturing business with the purchase of Massillon, Ohio, paper mill. In 2001, Greif bought Van Leer Industrial, giving Greif an international footprint and doubling the size of the company; the company's name was changed to Greif, Inc. In 2018, Greif received Gold Recognition from EcoVadis due to their ongoing commitment to sustainability and corporate social responsibility for the first time.
