Overview

Greve Midtby Center is a shopping centre located centrally in Greve Strand, Denmark, between the coastal Strandvejen and the Køge Bugt motorway. It was opened in 1979 as an open-air centre, its origins tracing back to the Køge Bugt plan of the 1960s, which designated a centre area near the planned S-train connection. The centre is intended to serve all citizens of Greve Strand. The centre offers a broad mix of retail and service branches. According to its official website, these include food and wine, flowers and lifestyle, services such as hairdressers, beauty salons and financial services, grocery stores, and takeaway dining. This makes it a versatile shopping destination catering to wardrobe, gifts, home improvement, daily groceries and dining needs. In 2000–2002 the centre underwent a major renovation: all streets within the centre were covered with a transparent glass roof, parking areas were reorganised and expanded, and a large føtex building was added at the northern end. The driving access to the southern parking area and the new Centerholmen was changed to a roundabout connecting both sides of Holmeagervej. Adjacent to the centre are Greve Svømmehal (swimming hall), and to the west, across Holmeagervej, Greve Rådhus (town hall) and Greve Gymnasium. The centre is served by Greve Station with S-train lines A and E and buses 224, 225 and 600S.

History

Greve Midtby Center opened in 1979 as an open-air centre. Its origins go back to the Køge Bugt plan of the 1960s. When the so-called "Køge Bugt finger" of the Fingerplan was adopted in 1961, it was decided that the area should be divided into districts located between Køge Bugt and a planned motorway, separated by green wedges. The urban area of Greve was designated to accommodate 19,450 inhabitants, and as part of the plan a centre area was designated near the planned S-train connection that would link the urban finger to the capital. The centre area included areas on both sides of the planned railway, with schools and a gymnasium planned in immediate proximity. In reality, however, the centre itself came to be located only west of the railway. In the years 2000–2002, a reconstruction of the centre and the areas towards the town hall and gymnasium was initiated, presented in Local Plan 12.33. All streets in the centre were covered by a transparent roof, and the parking areas were reorganised and expanded. A large føtex building was added at the northern end of the centre, along with several commercial buildings west of the centre's southern parking area. The driving access to the southern parking area and the new Centerholmen was changed to a roundabout connecting both sides of Holmeagervej, where there had previously been two staggered intersections. The centre is located next to Greve Station, which is served by S-train lines A and E as well as buses 224, 225 and 600S. Adjacent to the centre lies Greve Svømmehal, and west of the centre, on the other side of Holmeagervej, are Greve Rådhus and Greve Gymnasium.
