Overview
Griesedieck Brothers Brewery is an American brewing company based in St. Louis, Missouri. Its official website describes a family brewing legacy spanning nine generations since 1711, when Johann Heinrich Griesedieck brewed his first batches of beer in Oelde-Stromberg, Westphalia. The family moved to St. Louis by the 1870s. The Original Griesedieck Brothers was created in 1911 by Henry Griesedieck Jr. for his five sons, after he split from the Independent Breweries Company. The company states that its previous brewery grew rapidly in the post-war era, reaching well over 1 million barrels by 1953 with at least a nine-state distribution, and that today's brewery is more humble but continues to produce beers.
History
According to the brewery's official website, the family brewing legacy spans nine generations since 1711, when Johann Heinrich Griesedieck brewed his first batches of beer in Oelde-Stromberg, Westphalia. In 1870, Johann's great-grandsons Anton, Franz, and Heinrich traveled to St. Louis. Anton and Heinrich opened a malt house in south St. Louis City for eight years and eventually operated multiple breweries, including the A. Griesedieck & Co. Brewery, the Phoenix Brewery, and the National Brewery. Franz's son, Henry L., opened the Griesedieck Western Brewery in Belleville. In 1911, The Original Griesedieck Brothers was created when Henry Griesedieck Jr. split from the Independent Breweries Company in December 1911 and created Griesedieck Brothers brewery for his five sons – Anton, Henry, Raymond, Robert, and Edward – naming his son Anton as company president. The Griesedieck Brothers purchased the Consumers Brewery at 1920 Shenandoah. The website states that the previous brewery saw rapid growth in the post-war era, climbing to well over 1 million barrels by 1953 with at least a nine-state distribution, and that today's brewery is far more humble but continues to produce beers.
