Overview

Grillifilms is a Helsinki-based film production company that specialises in high-end commercial films, branded content and still productions. Founded in 2006 as Kaivopuiston Grilli by Marko Antila, Mirsa Kaartinen, Pete Riski, Olli Rönkä, Hanna Tuovio and Mikko Tuovio, the company was renamed Grillifilms Oy on 1 April 2008. It emerged from the merger of two long-established Finnish commercial film production houses, Elohopea-filmi (founded 1973) and Filmitalli (founded 1974), giving it deep roots in the Finnish advertising film industry. The company offers full-service film production — concept preparation, crew, casting, locations, logistics and post-production — as well as line production, fixing services for visiting international productions, location scouting and permits. Its work spans cinematic TV commercials, global campaigns, branded content and still productions. Grillifilms collaborates with advertising agencies, creatives and brands, and has served clients such as Audi, Shell, Finlandia Vodka, McDonald's, RTL, Condé Nast Traveler, Yash Raj Films and MATIN KIM. Its production credits include international projects shot in Finland, from Helsinki rooftops to Lapland fells. Grillifilms has won numerous domestic and international awards. Notable honours include the Cannes Gold Lion in 2014 for the 'Hirviöt' film for the A-clinic foundation's Lasinen Lapsuus campaign, the Voitto Grand Prix 2014 for McDonald's 'Sankarit', the Moscow Gold and Golden Drum Silver in 2006 for Radio Nova's 'Rockin' Sparrow', and Eurobest Bronze 2008 and Cresta Winner 2009 for the Oululainen 'Reilu leipä' film series. From 2013 the company was part of the Nice Entertainment Group, which was built around Moskito Television and whose shares were sold to Modern Times Group (later Nordic Entertainment Group, then acquired by Fremantle in September 2021). In June 2022 Hanna Tuovio, CEO since 2007, bought the company's shares back from Fremantle, returning Grillifilms to independent Finnish ownership. The company remains active, producing commercial films for agencies and brands in Finland and internationally.

History

Grillifilms traces its origins to the merger of two pioneering Finnish commercial film production companies: Elohopea-filmi, founded in 1973, and Filmitalli, founded in 1974. In 2006 the two houses merged to form a new company initially named Kaivopuiston Grilli. The founders were Marko Antila, Mirsa Kaartinen, Pete Riski, Olli Rönkä, Hanna Tuovio and Mikko Tuovio. Hanna Tuovio has served as CEO since 2007. On 1 April 2008 the company was renamed Grillifilms Oy. From its early years Grillifilms built a reputation for award-winning commercial films. In 2006 Radio Nova's 'Rockin' Sparrow', directed by Pete Riski and produced by Hanna Tuovio, won Moscow Gold and Golden Drum Silver. The Oululainen 'Reilu leipä' film series, also directed by Pete Riski and produced by Hanna Tuovio, earned Eurobest Bronze in 2008 and a Cresta Winner award in 2009. In 2014 the 'Hirviöt' film for the A-clinic foundation's Lasinen Lapsuus campaign won a Cannes Gold Lion, and McDonald's 'Sankarit', directed by Mikko Lehtinen and produced by Petteri Lehtinen, won the Voitto Grand Prix. Over the years the company has worked with a roster of regular directors including Marko Antila, Viljami Eronen, Misko Iho, Vesa Manninen, Pete Riski, Olli Rönkä and Juuso Syrjä, alongside an evolving network of Finnish and international directors, cinematographers and creative talents. In September 2013, 87 percent of the shares of Nice Entertainment Group — the group built around Moskito Television, of which Grillifilms was a part — were sold to the Swedish Modern Times Group. The group was later renamed Nordic Entertainment Group and was acquired by Fremantle in September 2021. In June 2022 Hanna Tuovio bought Grillifilms' shares back from Fremantle, restoring independent Finnish ownership. Today Grillifilms operates from Helsinki as a full-service production company, producing high-end commercial films, branded content and still productions for agencies and brands in Finland and internationally. Its production services include concept preparation, crew, casting, locations, logistics and post-production, as well as line production, fixing for visiting productions, and location scouting and permits across Finland, from Helsinki rooftops to Lapland fells.
