Overview
Grimmener Stadtwerke (GSW) is a German municipal utility brand operating in the town of Grimmen in the district of Vorpommern-Greifswald, Mecklenburg-Vorpommern. It was founded on 5 January 2011 as a subsidiary within the Stadtwerke Greifswald group, the municipal energy and water utility wholly owned by the Universitäts- und Hansestadt Greifswald. GSW's core business is the local supply of electricity and gas; within the group it is specifically associated with the gas distribution network in Grimmen, which Stadtwerke Greifswald operates alongside its networks in Greifswald and Wackerow. The parent group Stadtwerke Greifswald traces its origins to nineteenth-century municipal gas, water and electricity works and was re-established as a modern GmbH in 1991. Over the following two decades it founded a series of specialised subsidiaries for electricity, gas, district heating, water and public transport, and from 2012 to 2016 it completed a re-municipalisation by buying back third-party shares. Grimmener Stadtwerke was one of the last subsidiaries to be brought fully into municipal ownership, with the remaining external stake acquired on 23 March 2015. On 1 August 2017 the parent company merged with its supply and generation subsidiaries, including Grimmener Stadtwerke, consolidating the group under the Stadtwerke Greifswald umbrella. Today GSW functions as the local utility brand for Grimmen within the larger Stadtwerke Greifswald organisation. The group as a whole serves more than 70,000 household and commercial customers in Mecklenburg-Vorpommern with electricity, gas, district heating and drinking water, and acts as the default supplier (Grundversorger) for electricity and gas in Greifswald. Its gas network business covers roughly 1,562 kilometres of low-pressure mains and about 6,500 house connections in Greifswald and Grimmen. The group also operates combined heat and power plants, biogas filling stations, electric vehicle charging points, a public transport subsidiary and a leisure swimming pool. Grimmener Stadtwerke itself is not a separately listed company; it is a wholly owned part of the Stadtwerke Greifswald group, which is in turn 100% owned by the city of Greifswald. Its public profile is therefore closely tied to the parent brand, and its operations are reported within the group's municipal utility activities rather than as an independent enterprise.
History
Grimmener Stadtwerke was founded on 5 January 2011 as a subsidiary of Stadtwerke Greifswald GmbH, the municipal utility of the Universitäts- und Hansestadt Greifswald. Its creation formed part of a broader wave of subsidiary foundations by the Greifswald utility, which had already established companies for district heating, swimming pools, gas, transport, water and electricity in the early 1990s and an energy generation company in 2011. The parent group's history reaches back much further. Street and square lighting with town gas began in Greifswald in 1815, the inner-city gas supply was expanded in 1858, waterworks were founded in 1887 and electricity works in 1906. In 1923 the Städtische Werke Greifswald was created, combining water and electricity works with an asphalt and gas works and later also a slaughterhouse, theatre and bathing establishment. Between 1949 and 1953 the Deutsche Wirtschaftskommission for the Soviet occupation zone transferred the municipal works into central administration under the 1949 energy industry ordinance. Municipal self-government became possible again under the law of 17 May 1990, and on 20 June 1990 the Greifswald city council resolved to re-establish the municipal utility. Stadtwerke Greifswald GmbH was founded on 29 May 1991. During the 1990s and 2000s the group operated through a family of subsidiaries. Grimmener Stadtwerke joined this structure in 2011, extending the group's supply footprint to the town of Grimmen. In the following years Stadtwerke Greifswald pursued a strategy of re-municipalisation, buying back third-party shares in its subsidiaries: Gasversorgung Greifswald (GVG) on 2 November 2012, Grimmener Stadtwerke (GSW) on 23 March 2015, and Stromversorgung Greifswald (SVG) and Wasserwerke Greifswald (WWG) on 1 January 2016. With the GSW acquisition, Grimmener Stadtwerke became fully owned within the municipal group. On 1 August 2017 Stadtwerke Greifswald GmbH merged with its subsidiaries for district heating, electricity, gas and water supply, energy generation and Grimmener Stadtwerke. At the same time part of Fernwärme Greifswald was spun off and renamed Stadtwerke Greifswald Innovationsgesellschaft mbH. As a result of this merger, Grimmener Stadtwerke ceased to be a separate legal entity and became an integrated part of the parent company, though its name continues to be used as a local utility brand for Grimmen. The group today supplies more than 70,000 people in Mecklenburg-Vorpommern with electricity, gas, district heating and drinking water, and operates the gas network in Grimmen alongside its networks in Greifswald and Wackerow.
