Overview
The Grossglockner Hochalpenstrassen AG (GROHAG) is the operating company of the Grossglockner High Alpine Road and other Austrian scenic roads and attractions. The road itself is a 48-kilometer high-alpine route from Fusch an der Großglocknerstraße in Salzburg to Heiligenblut in Carinthia, leading to the Kaiser-Franz-Josefs-Höhe with views of Austria's highest mountain, the Großglockner, and the Pasterze glacier. It is one of Austria's most visited excursion destinations and has been a listed monument since 2015.
History
The Grossglockner High Alpine Road has a long history: already 3,500 years ago people crossed the Hochtor pass at 2,504 meters. The idea for the project arose after the Habsburg Empire fragmented, with high unemployment and emerging tourism. The road was built thanks to the assertiveness of Salzburg's governor Franz Rehrl and the planning of engineer Franz Wallack.
