Overview
Trescal is a French multinational specializing in metrology and calibration services. Originally the metrology branch of Air Liquide, the business was created as a calibration division in 1999 following the acquisition of European metrology laboratories including Metrotech, and adopted the Trescal brand in 2004 after further acquisitions such as Livingston. The name derives in part from French mechanical engineer Henri Tresca, father of the standard metre. Trescal became independent in 2007 when it was acquired by Astorg Partners, and has since passed through several private-equity owners: 3i Group and TCR in 2010, Ardian (formerly AXA Private Equity) in 2013, and OMERS Private Equity in 2017 in a transaction valuing the company at around €670 million. Today Trescal describes itself as the global leader in calibration services. It calibrates 3.3 million instruments per year, 98% of which is in-house, covering 20,000 brands and 150,000 referenced instruments. Its service portfolio includes calibration, repair and maintenance, validation and qualification, asset management, procurement, and training and consulting. The company operates in 34 countries with 6,700 employees and a turnover of €665 million, serving more than 60,000 customers in aerospace, automotive, pharmaceutical, chemical, energy, electronics and telecommunications sectors. Trescal invests more than €25 million annually in new capabilities, laboratory refurbishments, automation, robots and training programs. Trescal positions itself as a single-source solution for precision services, offering multi-domain skills and accreditations across accelerometry, acoustic, chemical, dimensional, electrical, flow, hardness, humidity, mass, mechanical, pressure, RF & microwave, radiometry-photometry, temperature, time & frequency, torque and volume. The group has grown largely through external acquisitions, purchasing 35 companies in more than 25 countries since 2017. It is headquartered in France and remains privately held under OMERS Private Equity.
History
Trescal's history begins with Metrotech, a company founded in 1956 and based in Vendôme, France. In 1999, Air Liquide acquired Metrotech and other European metrology laboratories, creating its calibration division. In 2004, after integrating further acquisitions in Europe such as Livingston, Air Liquide's calibration division adopted the brand Trescal. The name Trescal derives in part from the French mechanical engineer Henri Tresca, known as the father of the standard metre. In 2007, Trescal became independent when it was acquired by the European investment fund Astorg Partners. At that time, the company operated in Germany, Spain, France, the Netherlands, Italy and Scandinavia. In 2010, the British fund 3i Group and TCR acquired Trescal, accelerating its growth in the United States and Asia. Three years later, in 2013, 3i Group sold its stake to Ardian, formerly known as AXA Private Equity. In 2017, the Canadian fund OMERS Private Equity acquired a majority stake in Trescal, in a transaction valuing the company at approximately €670 million. This was OMERS's first investment in France. Since 2017, Trescal has acquired 35 companies in more than 25 countries, expanding its presence across all continents through external growth. Long considered a simple SME, Trescal has become a mid-sized company (ETI) with multiple country managements and business units. By 2025, Trescal reported a global turnover of €665 million with 6,700 employees in 34 countries. The company calibrates 3.3 million instruments per year, 98% of which is in-house, covering 20,000 brands and 150,000 referenced instruments.
