Overview

Grundeigentümer-Versicherung VVaG (GEV) is a German mutual insurance company headquartered in Hamburg. It was founded in 1891 by the Grundeigentümer-Verein in Hamburg von 1832 e. V. as the Haftpflicht-Versicherungs-Verein der Hamburger Grundeigentümer, initially to insure Hamburg property owners against liability claims arising from their ownership. Over more than 130 years it has developed into a specialist insurer for real estate and home-related risks, offering residential building insurance, household contents insurance, private liability insurance and holiday home insurance. As a Versicherungsverein auf Gegenseitigkeit (VVaG), policyholders are simultaneously members of the association, and the company remains fully independent, not tied to any group or shareholders. Its Max tariffs for residential building, household contents and private liability insurance have been recognised as test winners by Stiftung Warentest. The company operates throughout Germany and is a member of the Gesamtverband der Versicherer (GDV).

History

The Grundeigentümer-Versicherung VVaG (GEV) was founded in 1891 in Hamburg by the Grundeigentümer-Verein in Hamburg von 1832 e. V. as the Haftpflicht-Versicherungs-Verein der Hamburger Grundeigentümer. Its purpose was to insure members against liability claims brought against them as property owners due to personal accidents or property damage. It was inspired by the idea of self-help within a solidarity community. With Hamburg's growth in the early 20th century, the association grew. Even the outbreak of World War I in 1914 did not stop its rise, though the recession of the 1920s did. Growth resumed in the 1930s, but the Nazi takeover severely restricted its development. In 1936 the Vereinigung deutscher Haus- und Grundbesitzer-Versicherungsgesellschaften e. V. was formed, chaired by Kurth, then chairman of the Haftpflichtversicherungs-Vereins der Hamburger Grundeigenthümer. In 1941 a far-reaching change to the statutes, approved by the supervisory authority, allowed it to operate other insurance branches. After World War II, the association survived despite low premium income. With reconstruction and the building industry's efforts, 1953 brought an upturn; it adopted new statutes and insurance conditions. In 1956 the general meeting decided to expand into private, family and dog owner liability insurance. In 1963 it bought its first own property at Beselerplatz in Hamburg-Othmarschen. In 1965 fire, burglary, robbery, glass and water damage insurance as well as combined household contents insurance were added. In 1967 the combined household contents insurance was extended to include storm damage. In 1968 the members' meeting resolved to expand into Bremen, Lower Saxony and Schleswig-Holstein, but the Federal Insurance Supervisory Office only approved expansion within a 100 km radius of Hamburg. In 1969 the association was converted from a small to a large mutual insurance association and renamed Grundeigentümer-Versicherung – Versicherungsverein auf Gegenseitigkeit in Hamburg. In 1971 it expanded its business area to Bremen, Lower Saxony and Schleswig-Holstein, and gradually extended its insurance offerings around real estate. Also in 1971, GEV introduced the so-called wastewater clause into its property owner liability insurance conditions, making wastewater damage to third parties insurable. It also introduced a continuation clause so that spouses of deceased policyholders remained insured until the next premium invoice. In 1978 it merged with the insurance associations of Berlin, Lower Saxony and Hamburg, creating a specialist insurer for risks from house, apartment and land ownership, and was renamed Grundeigentümer-Versicherung Versicherungsverein auf Gegenseitigkeit. The business area was extended to the entire Federal Republic and West Berlin, and later to all of Germany after reunification. In 1994 GEV moved into a newly acquired office building at Große Bäckerstraße, which remains its headquarters. In 2003 GET Service GmbH – Versicherungsmakler für Grundeigentümer was founded to serve house and property owners' associations nationwide. The GEV still operates as a mutual insurance association (VVaG), with policyholders as members whose interests are represented by elected member representatives at the general meeting. Its earnings are used exclusively for price stability and strengthening economic performance. It remains independent, not obligated to shareholders and not part of any group. It is a member of the Gesamtverband der Versicherer (GDV).
