Overview

The Gruppo italiano scrittori di montagna (GISM), whose full name is «Gruppo italiano scrittori di montagna – Accademia di arte e cultura alpina», is an Italian cultural organisation of writers and other figures who devoted part of their life and work to alpinism. It was founded in 1929 in Turin by the physician Agostino Ferrari and the jurist Adolfo Balliano, together with a number of mountaineers and intellectuals. The founding came shortly after the Club Alpino Italiano (CAI) had been integrated into Italy's fascist-oriented sports movement, the Comitato Olimpico Nazionale Italiano; the initiators wanted to create a meeting point for politically independent and culturally engaged mountaineers. They rejected the view of alpinism as merely one sport among others and sought to preserve a holistic outlook that included enthusiasm for the mountain world as a living space for nature and people. Beyond purely technical aspects, ethical guidelines such as respect for the mountain environment were to be observed. The association's purposes therefore also included nature conservation and support for alpine communities. Members of the group have included, among many others, the writer and photographer Guido Rey, the French travel writer Paul Guiton, Duke Luigi Amedeo di Savoia-Aosta, the director of Turin's Alpine Museum Attilio Viriglio, the jurist and translator Camillo Giussani (after whom the Rifugio Camillo Giussani in the Dolomites is named), the CAI editor Giovanni Bertoglio, Count Carlo Toesca di Castellazzo, the writer Salvator Gotta, the clergyman and alpine botanist from the Aosta Valley Joseph-Marie Henry, the Milanese poet and linguist Giovanni Bertacchi, the Ticinese journalist Aurelio Garobbio, the alpinist Giuseppe Lampugnani (commemorated by the Bivacco Giuseppe Lampugnani on Mont Blanc), the writer and editor Dino Buzzati, the Trieste alpinist Bianca Di Beaco, and the Trentino alpinist and writer Cesare Maestri. The cultural association, which has its seat in Milan, has been presided over by well-known mountain writers including Salvator Gotta, Giulio Bedeschi and Spiro Dalla Porta Xydias. It remains an active body dedicated to alpine letters and culture, and in 2019 it marked its ninetieth anniversary with the publication «1929–2019. Novant'anni di Gruppo italiano scrittori di montagna».
