Overview

GSI Musique (GSI for "Gestion Son Image") is a Canadian record label based in Montreal, Quebec. Founded in 1983 by Robert Vinet, it is described as the oldest Quebec record company. The label produces and markets sound recordings and music DVDs by Francophone authors, composers, and performers, and also manages some of their artistic careers and coordinates tours. Over its history, GSI Musique has brought to market nearly 300 records and music DVDs, produced several television specials and concert tours, and published a vast musical catalogue that includes many classics of Quebec song. The company has contributed to the careers of leading artists such as Jean-Pierre Ferland, Robert Charlebois, Sylvain Lelièvre, Yvon Deschamps, Claude Gauthier, Diane Dufresne, Daniel Lavoie, Marie-Jo Thério, and Gilles Vigneault. It has also produced notable shows, including Diane Dufresne's Top Secret and Daniel Boucher's Dix mille matins, as well as television series such as Tapis rouge (Félix Award 1987 – Best Variety Show). GSI Musique was one of the first record companies to produce a musical in Quebec: Gala by Jean-Pierre Ferland, presented at Place des Arts in 1984. In 2010, GSI reissued 1 FOIS 5 on CD and DVD, a historic concert that had brought together Charlebois, Deschamps, Ferland, Léveillée, and Vigneault on Mount Royal on June 23, 1976. In 2010, the company was acquired by Nicolas Lemieux. While continuing GSI Musique's mission to invest in the creation and promotion of original, innovative, and quality French-language song, Lemieux has significantly intensified the label's digital shift, innovated in its music marketing approaches, and designed event shows and multiplatform projects. The label also launched La Confiserie in 2006, a sub-label dedicated to independent singer-songwriters, initially partnering with Jean-Philippe Fréchette (Navet Confit). In January 2007, singer-songwriter Émilie Proulx became the second artist to join La Confiserie, followed by Carl-Éric Hudon and Polipe in 2009.

History

GSI Musique was founded in 1983 by Robert Vinet under the name Gestion Son Image. From the outset, Vinet gathered major Quebec artists such as Jean-Pierre Ferland, Gilles Vigneault, Diane Dufresne, and Robert Charlebois. In its first 23 years, more than 150 albums were added to the company's repertoire. Alongside the original artists, the roster grew to include Marie-Jo Thério, Daniel Boucher, Andrea Lindsay, Chloé Sainte-Marie, and Navet Confit, as well as Daniel Lavoie, Térez Montcalm, and others. In its early years, Société Gestion Son et Image presented shows such as Claude Dubois's Rencontres de rêve, Diane Dufresne's Top Secret, Gilles Vigneault's Le temps de dire, and Robert Charlebois's Tropical Rock Band. It also ventured into theatre by co-producing Michel Tremblay's play Le Vrai Monde? at Théâtre Outremont. GSI was one of the first companies to produce musical theatre in Quebec when Jean-Pierre Ferland's Gala took the stage at Place des Arts in 1984. On the record side, the company placed reissues of Jean-Pierre Ferland's Jaune, Soleil, and Bleu blanc blues in record stores, along with Yvon Deschamps's Les Coffrets doubles anthologiques de 1969 à 1984, Diane Dufresne's Top secret and two double box sets, Robert Charlebois's Mon meilleur Best and Dense, as well as albums from the shows J'ai vu le loup, le renard, le lion with Leclerc, Vigneault, and Charlebois, and 1 fois 5, bringing together Ferland, Deschamps, Vigneault, Charlebois, and Léveillée. The company produced the television series Tapis rouge (Félix Award 1987 – Best Variety Show). During that decade, it brought to the screen Diane Dufresne's Follement vôtre and Top secret, the documentary series De profil et de face, revealing a facet of Quebec culture through the work of an artist, and the weekly show L'Autobus du showbusiness, hosted by Jean-Pierre Ferland. During the 1990s, GSI presented a succession of shows: Charlebois's La Maudite Tournée, Jean-Pierre Ferland's Écoute pas ça, as well as performances by Gilles Vigneault, Sylvain Lelièvre, Claude Gauthier, and many others. During this period, several records were produced, including Jean-Pierre Ferland's Écoute pas ça and L'amour c'est de l'ouvrage. Vigneault released Au doux milieu de vous and C'est ainsi que j'arrive à toi, while Diane Dufresne released Que in 1997. Reissues and anthology box sets by Ferland, Steve Faulkner, Dufresne, Robert Paquette, and others were added to the catalogue. GSI made the first recordings of Marie-Jo Thério with Comme de la musique and Les Matins habitables (2005), and co-produced La Maline with Audiogram. In the early 2000s, GSI introduced Daniel Boucher with his Dix mille matins, which sold over 100,000 copies. GSI Musique was the first to produce a tribute album with Le petit roi by Jean-Pierre Ferland. In 2006, GSI Musique launched La Confiserie, a label welcoming only independent singer-songwriter-producers, initially partnering with Jean-Philippe Fréchette (alias Navet Confit). In January 2007, singer-songwriter Émilie Proulx became the second artist to join La Confiserie, with which she released her first maxi, followed by Carl-Éric Hudon and Polipe in 2009. In 2010, GSI Musique was acquired by Nicolas Lemieux. While continuing the label's mission to invest in the creation and promotion of original, innovative, and quality French-language song, Lemieux has significantly intensified the digital shift undertaken by the record company, innovated in its music marketing approaches, and designed event shows and multiplatform projects. In 2010, GSI reissued 1 FOIS 5 on CD and DVD, a historic concert that had brought together Charlebois, Deschamps, Ferland, Léveillée, and Vigneault on Mount Royal on June 23, 1976.
