Overview

Guidestar Israel (Hebrew: גיידסטאר) is a government-run online platform that provides public access to official information about corporations registered in Israel. Operated by the Israel Ministry of Justice, it serves as the central repository for data on nonprofits (amutot, public benefit companies, and endowments) and, since 2023, also on all registered companies. The platform displays over 400,000 corporations, including approximately 44,500 nonprofit organizations. It aggregates data from government systems such as the Corporations Authority's 'Bereshit' system, the Tax Authority, the Ministry of Finance, National Insurance, the Ministry of Education, and Freedom of Information requests. Nonprofits can voluntarily add details about their activities, branches, and contact information. The site was initiated in 2009 as a pilot and opened to the public in July 2010. It was originally built by NPTech Technology and is now managed by the Ministry of Justice in collaboration with JDC-Israel and Yad Hanadiv. A public steering committee with representatives from government, civil society, and business oversees the project. Guidestar Israel is part of the global GuideStar network, which began in the United States in 1994 and expanded internationally through GuideStar International, founded in 2004. The Israeli platform aims to promote transparency and accessibility of information about the third sector and the business sector.

History

Guidestar Israel was initiated as a collaborative project by the Israel Ministry of Justice, JDC-Israel, and Yad Hanadiv (Rothschild Foundation). It was originally built by NPTech Technology. The website was launched in a pilot version in 2009 and opened to the general public in July 2010. The project was inspired by GuideStar USA, established in 1994, and GuideStar International, founded in 2004 to promote similar initiatives worldwide. In 2021, during the COVID-19 pandemic, a new feature was added allowing nonprofits to submit requests for support from government ministries. This feature was used again during the Iron Swords War in 2023 and 2024 for support requests to the Accountant General. Since 2022, an inter-ministerial steering committee with representatives from government ministries, civil society, and other guests has been discussing initiatives and development directions for the site, voting and overseeing the project. Starting in 2023, the site also displays all companies registered in Israel, in addition to the nonprofit organizations previously shown. From October 2023, users can register to receive push updates about organizations they select.
