Overview
Guruvayur Municipality is an urban local government body (municipality) located in Chavakkad Taluk, Thrissur district, Kerala, India. It administers the town of Guruvayur, which is famous for the Guruvayur Sree Krishna Temple, a major pilgrimage centre. The municipality was formed on 26 January 1962 as Guruvayur Township by merging Guruvayur with nearby places such as Iringapram, Chavakkad and Thaikkad. In 1995 it was upgraded to a municipality. The first chairperson was P. K. Santhakumari of the Indian National Congress. In 2010, the neighbouring Thaikkad and Pookode grama panchayats were merged into the municipality. In the 2015 elections, the Left Democratic Front (LDF) came to power, and Santhakumari, who had been expelled from the Congress, contested with left support and became chairperson again. The municipality is one of the smallest in Kerala by area. It is bounded on the east by Kandanassery and Pavaratty panchayats, on the north by Punnayur and Punnayurkulam panchayats and Kunnamkulam Municipality, on the west by Chavakkad Municipality, and on the south by Kadappuram panchayat. The terrain is flat, with sandy soil, and the water is generally saline due to proximity to the sea. The main crops include coconut. The Canoli Canal passes through Ward 40 (Vazhappully). The municipality provides services such as issuance of certificates (birth, death, marriage, building), property tax collection, building permits, welfare pensions, and complaint registration. It operates under the Kerala Municipality Act of 1994 and the 74th Constitutional Amendment Act of 1992. The current chairperson is Sunitha Aravindhan, the vice chairperson is K K Jyothiraj, and the secretary is Abhilashkumar H. The municipality's website is developed and maintained by the Information Kerala Mission.
