Overview

Gustav Wahler is a German automotive supplier brand founded in 1902 by Gustav Wahler in Pforzheim as a metal-spinning business. It moved to Esslingen am Neckar in 1911 and began series production of bellows thermostats for the automotive industry in 1928. Over the following decades the company expanded its product range to include exhaust gas recirculation (EGR) lines and valves, electrically heated thermostats, and other components for combustion engines. It established international subsidiaries in Brazil (1973), Argentina and North America (late 1990s), and later operated plants in Slovakia, China, India, and the United States. In December 2013, BorgWarner Inc. announced the acquisition of all shares in Gustav Wahler GmbH u. Co. KG, completed on 1 April 2014. The Wahler name was retained as a product brand within BorgWarner. In 2019 the thermostat business was sold to Arlington Germany GmbH, and after Arlington's insolvency, the Oberboihingen site and the trademark rights to the Wahler name and logo were acquired by Thermal Management Solutions DE Oberboihingen in February 2021. Today the brand remains associated with thermostats and thermal management components for internal combustion engines.

History

Gustav Wahler founded the company in 1902 in Pforzheim as a metal-spinning workshop. In 1911 the business relocated to its future headquarters in Esslingen am Neckar (then spelled Eßlingen). By 1928, Wahler was already producing bellows thermostats in series for the automotive industry, marking its entry into engine temperature control. In 1967 a second site was opened in nearby Oberboihingen, initiating a phase of expansion. In 1973 the first foreign subsidiary was established in Brazil. At the beginning of the 1980s, Wahler started large-scale series production of exhaust gas recirculation (EGR) lines, followed in 1994 by series production of EGR valves. Toward the end of the 1990s, the company expanded again with branches in Argentina and North America. In the following year, series production of electrically heated thermostats began. In December 2013, the US automotive supplier BorgWarner, headquartered in Auburn Hills, Michigan, announced it would acquire all shares in Gustav Wahler GmbH u. Co. KG. The acquisition was completed on 1 April 2014. The Wahler name was to be retained as a product brand within the company. On 1 April 2019, the thermostat division was sold to Arlington Germany GmbH. After Arlington Germany GmbH became insolvent, the Oberboihingen site was purchased by the newly founded company Thermal Management Solutions DE Oberboihingen on 27 February 2021. With the purchase, the trademark rights to the logo and the name passed to the new company. The company maintains seven locations worldwide: headquarters in Esslingen am Neckar; a plant in Oberboihingen, Baden-Württemberg; a plant in Šahy, Slovakia; a plant in Hangzhou, People's Republic of China; a plant in Pune, India; a plant in Piracicaba, Brazil; and a branch in Livonia, Michigan, United States.
