Overview

GVV Kommunalversicherung VVaG (GVV Kommunal) is a German mutual insurance association headquartered in Cologne. It was founded on 20 June 1911 by the Rhenish-Westphalian municipalities in Cologne under the name "Haftpflichtverband Rheinisch-Westfälischer Gemeinden, Versicherungsverein auf Gegenseitigkeit in Cöln". The company is a member insurance association for cities, municipalities, districts, municipal enterprises and savings banks, covering municipal risks as a solidarity and risk community. Its business territory covers North Rhine-Westphalia (partly in cooperation with the Kommunale Schadenausgleiche), Rhineland-Palatinate excluding the Palatinate, Hesse, Saarland, Berlin, Bremen, Hamburg and the Hohenzollern-Sigmaringen part of Baden-Württemberg; in Lower Saxony and Schleswig-Holstein it offers cover in cooperation with the Kommunale Schadenausgleiche Hannover and Kiel. GVV Kommunal operates offices in Cologne and Wiesbaden. Alongside the municipal insurance business, the group operates GVV Direktversicherung AG (GVV Direkt), a direct insurer founded in 1989 as GVV Privatversicherung AG. Originally it insured employees and honorary officeholders of cities and municipalities, districts, municipal enterprises and savings banks, their family members and active members of voluntary fire brigades. Since June 2015 GVV Direkt has been open to everyone, so people outside the municipal service can also take out policies. GVV Direkt offers a broad retail portfolio including personal liability, household contents, residential building, legal protection, personal accident and motor insurance, as well as supplementary modules, and markets itself as a responsible direct insurer with municipal roots. The brand family is presented as "GVV Versicherungen", the interplay of GVV Direkt and GVV Kommunal. GVV Kommunal describes itself as a reliable partner for cities, municipalities, districts, municipal enterprises and savings banks for over 115 years, while GVV Direkt complements this commitment with insurance for life and values. The group is active in digitalisation and maintains a strong commitment to volunteering, for example through the annual GVV Ehrenamtspreis (volunteering award).

History

GVV Kommunalversicherung VVaG was founded on 20 June 1911 in Cologne by the Rhenish-Westphalian municipalities as the "Haftpflichtverband Rheinisch-Westfälischer Gemeinden, Versicherungsverein auf Gegenseitigkeit in Cöln". With this step, municipalities created a self-insurance institution that carries municipal risks as a solidarity and risk community. In 1925 the name changed to "Preußischer Versicherungsverband für Gemeinden und Gemeindeverbände, Versicherungsverein auf Gegenseitigkeit". In 1946 the prefix "Preußischer" was dropped from the name; the designation "GVV" later became established for the "Gemeindeversicherungsverband". In 1989 the GVV founded its subsidiary GVV Privatversicherung AG ("GVV Privat"), which allowed employees in municipal administration, honorary officeholders and members of voluntary fire brigades to insure themselves. In 2011 the company celebrated its 100th anniversary with a major ceremony on 20 June in the Cologne Gürzenich hall. In 2020 GVV Privatversicherung was renamed GVV Direktversicherung AG ("GVV Direkt"). Since June 2015 GVV Direkt has been open to everyone, so people outside the municipal service can also take out policies. Today GVV Kommunal is a member insurance association for cities, municipalities, districts, municipal enterprises and savings banks. The company operates offices in Cologne and Wiesbaden. Under the umbrella of "GVV Versicherungen", GVV Kommunal and its direct-insurance subsidiary GVV Direkt together serve both municipal clients and private customers.
