History
The history of Gwangju Metropolitan City Corporation is rooted in the establishment of three separate public entities in the early 1990s. On February 17, 1993, the Transportation Management Corporation (교통관리공사) was founded. Subsequently, on June 18, 1993, the ordinance for the establishment of the Urban Development Corporation (도시개발공사) was promulgated, and the corporation was officially launched on September 1, 1993. On May 19, 1995, the Sports Facilities Management Foundation (체육시설관리공단) was established. On September 1, 1998, the Facilities Management Foundation (시설관리공단) was created by merging the Sports Facilities Management Foundation and the Transportation Management Corporation. Finally, on June 1, 1999, the Urban Development Corporation and the Facilities Management Foundation were merged to form the Gwangju Metropolitan City Corporation (도시공사), which began operations as the integrated public enterprise. Following its establishment, the corporation underwent numerous organizational restructurings to improve efficiency and adapt to new responsibilities. On June 1, 2003, a management innovation reorganization took place, creating a structure of 1 office, 4 departments, 1 business office, 12 teams, and 1 management office. In 2004, an aggregate management team was newly established, and the management of the metropolitan sanitary landfill was transferred to the Environmental Facilities Corporation. In 2005, the corporation returned the National Life Center and transferred the sanitary landfill, while also returning the Women's Development Center swimming pool and five on-street parking lots. In 2006, two more on-street parking lots were returned. In 2007, the corporation reorganized to support the construction of the Innovation City, creating a structure of 2 headquarters, 2 business divisions, and 18 teams. The vehicle towing business was returned to autonomous districts, and capital was increased from 98 billion won to 105.4 billion won. In 2008, a new business development team was established. In 2009, the organization was expanded to 2 headquarters, 1 office, 4 divisions, 16 teams, and 1 business office, and capital was increased again from 105.4 billion won to 162.5 billion won. In 2010, further reorganization led to 2 headquarters, 3 offices, 1 division, 1 office, 15 teams, and 1 business office. In 2011, under an advancement plan, the organization was restructured to 3 headquarters, 1 office, 2 centers, 13 teams, and 1 business office. The corporation also took over the operation of the Jeungsimsa parking lot (448 spaces) and increased capital from 162.5 billion won to 195.3 billion won. In 2012, the Children's Traffic Park was transferred to the corporation. The corporation has continued to manage various public facilities and services, including golf courses, swimming pools, ice rinks, parking lots, and rental housing complexes.
