Overview
Transport GZM is a transport brand created by the Górnośląsko-Zagłębiowska Metropolia (GZM), the metropolitan association in Poland's Upper Silesian and Zagłębie region. Its purpose is to bring all of the Metropolis's sustainable mobility activities under a single common denominator: the Transport GZM brand. The main organizer behind the brand is the Zarząd Transportu Metropolitalnego (ZTM), the Metropolitan Transport Authority. The brand's first and breakthrough project was a new fare-payment and ticketing system that replaced the earlier ŚKUP (Śląska Karta Usług Publicznych) system. The centerpiece of the new system is the Transport GZM mobile application, known as Metroappka, which launched on 7 August 2023. The app was initially criticized for technical errors and difficulties in migrating from old ŚKUP accounts to new Transport GZM accounts. The contractor for the app is Asseco Poland, the same company that designed and implemented the ŚKUP system. Nevertheless, Metroappka resolved many of the problems that had been the source of criticism of ŚKUP. The new system introduced a mobile app and web portal as the basis of the system, made the physical card (Metrokarta) optional, enabled automatic activation of purchased tickets without the need for coding, allowed identification by a ticket inspector using only a phone number or payment card, removed the need to visit a Passenger Service Point when creating an account (registration is done through the portal), added a start/stop function to facilitate transfers with settlement at the end of the day, and offered the full range of tickets including period tickets. The main task of Transport GZM is to create a coherent image for all mobility carried out within the GZM area. Its counterpart in another urban center is Warszawski Transport Publiczny (Warsaw Public Transport), which was also created to unify the image. The main task facing Transport GZM is fare and ticket integration to connect buses, trams, and trolleybuses with regional railways. A step toward this was an agreement signed in December 2023 between the GZM Metropolis and POLREGIO and Koleje Śląskie, which will allow passengers using a 30-day ticket to travel by all these means of transport. The largest project of the Metropolis in the field of transport integration is the Kolej Metropolitalna (Metropolitan Railway), which was indicated as a priority in the "Dobra Mobilność 30/50" package adopted on 5 December 2023 by resolution No. 368/2023 of the Management Board of the Górnośląsko-Zagłębiowska Metropolia. In terms of visual identity, ultimately every vehicle that is part of public transport operated by GZM will appear under the Transport GZM brand. The changes first affected buses. Metrorowery, introduced on 25 February 2024 and the largest city bike system in Poland, are also presented under the Transport GZM brand. Holders of period tickets can use the bikes for 60 minutes each day. Serwis GZM, a company established on 15 February 2023 by GZM with its seat at Pokoju 1 Street in Tarnowskie Góry, handles the acquisition and provision of drivers to carriers, stop maintenance, ticket inspection, and advertising in Transport GZM public transport. It is intended primarily to facilitate the Metropolis's management of stop infrastructure and improve monitoring of task implementation. From 1 April, among others, Przedsiębiorstwo Komunikacji Metropolitalnej (PKM Świerklaniec) transferred competences for managing stop infrastructure fully to Serwis GZM. As a result, stop poles are being replaced with those conforming to the unified design in force in the Metropolis, and they also bear the Transport GZM brand logo.
