Overview

Hércules de Ediciones is an independent publishing house based in A Coruña, Galicia, Spain. It was founded in 1985 by Francisco Rodríguez Iglesias with the aim of promoting Galician culture through major works of rigorous, high-quality popularisation. The company's most singular undertaking is the Proxecto Galicia, a multi-volume encyclopaedic project that brings together leading Galician intellectuals and comprises ten series with 64 published volumes, described as an editorial endeavour without precedent in Galicia. For this project, Hércules received the Medalla Castelao in 2007. Under the direction of publisher Laura Rodríguez Herrera, the press has expanded its scope both within Galicia and across the rest of Spain. Its catalogue includes current-affairs works in dialogue with other cultures, translations of successful novels from abroad into Galician, and children's and young-adult literature, all in carefully produced editions. Themes such as feminism, diversity, and cultural popularisation are prominent, notably through the Colección Púrpura and Novas Lecturas de Hércules. The publisher issues books in Galician, Spanish, Portuguese, and English. Hércules de Ediciones remains an independent, private company. Its output ranges from large reference and heritage series — such as Galicia para soñar, A Grande Obra dos Camiños de Santiago, and Mosteiros e Conventos da Península Ibérica — to accessible literature, poetry, cookery, and illustrated children's series. It participates in regional book fairs, including the Feria del Libro de A Coruña, and engages with the press to promote its authors and titles.

History

Hércules de Ediciones was founded in 1985 by Francisco Rodríguez Iglesias in A Coruña, Galicia, with the goal of promoting Galician culture from the world of publishing. Its headquarters remain in the city of A Coruña. The house's defining project, Proxecto Galicia, was conceived as a vast, multi-disciplinary reference work bringing together prominent Galician intellectuals. Contributors included Xosé Ramón Barreiro Fernández, Fernando González Laxe, Xosé Manuel González Reboredo, Darío Villanueva Prieto, Xulio Correa Corredoira, Francisco Díaz-Fierros Viqueira, and Siro López Lorenzo, as well as Xosé Filgueira Valverde, Domingo García-Sabell, and Francisco Javier Río Barja, who participated until their deaths in 1996, 2003, and 2011 respectively. The project eventually comprised ten series with 64 published volumes and has been described as an editorial endeavour without precedent in Galicia. In June 2007, Proxecto Galicia was awarded the Medalla Castelao by the President of the Xunta de Galicia, recognising its contribution to Galician culture. Over its trajectory, Hércules has received numerous awards for its business activity. By 2014, its management team included president Francisco Rodríguez Iglesias, director Laura Rodríguez Herrera, and managing director Manuel Gándara Armada. Under Laura Rodríguez Herrera's leadership, the independent A Coruña publisher has taken on new challenges in Galicia and the rest of Spain. It has broadened its catalogue to include current-affairs works in permanent dialogue with other cultures, translations of novels that succeeded abroad into Galician, and children's and young-adult literature, always in carefully produced editions. The catalogue highlights feminism, diversity, and cultural popularisation, particularly through the Colección Púrpura and Novas Lecturas de Hércules. The publisher continues to release new titles and series, including the multi-volume A Grande Obra dos Camiños de Santiago, and participates in regional book fairs such as the Feria del Libro de A Coruña.
