Overview

Hödlmayr Logisitcs GmbH is the operating brand of the Hödlmayr group, an Austrian automotive logistics company headquartered in Schwertberg, Upper Austria. Founded in 1954 by Johann Hödlmayr as a transport business, the company evolved from a regional haulier into a leading specialist for finished-vehicle logistics. Its services cover the entire vehicle supply chain: acting as a releasing agent at the factory, organising rail and truck transport to distribution centres across Europe, operating logistics centres, performing pre-delivery inspections and technical preparation, and delivering vehicles to dealers and end customers. The group also offers smart repair, vehicle conversion, accessory installation and fleet-related services. Hödlmayr operates an extensive European network with its own distribution centres and transport fleets. According to its website, the company has more than 70 years of experience and employs over 1,900 people. Its locations include Schwertberg, Graz, Vienna, Wiener Neustadt, Garmisch-Partenkirchen, Leipzig, Rosenheim and Cologne in the German-speaking region, as well as Győr, Jeneč near Prague, Bascov, Sofia, Zagreb, Logatec, Tongeren, Maastricht, Barcelona, Istanbul, Kiev, Tbilisi and Kragujevac. This footprint supports both road and rail transport, with a growing emphasis on multimodal and sustainable mobility solutions. The company is privately held by the Hödlmayr family. The second generation entered the business in the mid-1970s, and in 1999 the Hödlmayr International AG was established as a holding structure. A member of the third generation, Johannes Alexander Hödlmayr, joined operations in 2019. The group has expanded through subsidiaries, branches and joint ventures since the mid-1980s, and has invested in environmental measures such as a large photovoltaic installation in Belgium. Hödlmayr positions itself as a partner to leading manufacturers, importers, dealers and fleet owners, offering door-to-door concepts and customised logistics solutions.

History

Hödlmayr was founded in 1954 by Johann Hödlmayr as a transport company in Austria. Initially a general freight carrier, the business began to specialise in vehicle transport in 1961 when it purchased its first two car transporters. In 1968 it established its first customs warehouse on its own land, and in 1971 it opened its first central warehouse for an Austrian importer. A dedicated rail connection was built in Schwertberg in 1973, marking an early commitment to multimodal transport. The second generation joined the company in the mid-1970s: Christine Hödlmayr-Gammer in 1975 and Johannes Hödlmayr in 1976. In 1980 the company expanded its core competencies to include vehicle conversion. From 1984 onwards, Hödlmayr began a period of international expansion, founding subsidiaries, branches and joint ventures across Europe. The first location was Rosenheim in 1984, followed by Hungary and Belgium in 1990, Graz in 1991, the Czech Republic in 1992, Slovenia in 1994, Croatia in 1999, Romania, Serbia and Cologne in 2002, Slovakia in 2006, Bulgaria and Ukraine in 2008, Turkey in 2011, Valencia in 2012, Wiener Neustadt in 2013, Georgia in 2014, Leipzig in 2015 and Barcelona in 2024. In 1999, the Hödlmayr International AG was established as the group's holding company. Environmental initiatives gained prominence: in 2011, the first photovoltaic system on Hödlmayr property was installed in Belgium, with 21,500 solar panels capable of saving around 1,456 tonnes of CO2. In 2013, the company expanded its commercial vehicle transport division to meet growing market demands. In 2017, Hödlmayr Rail Logistics GmbH was founded to further professionalise rail transport within the portfolio. The company celebrated its 65th anniversary in 2019, the same year that Johannes Alexander Hödlmayr, a member of the third generation, joined the operational business. In 2021, Hödlmayr Urban Logistics was founded, extending the group's activities into urban logistics solutions. Today, Hödlmayr operates a Europe-wide logistics network with its own distribution centres and transport fleets, serving manufacturers, importers, dealers, fleet owners, leasing companies, banks, insurance companies and rental firms. The company remains family-owned and continues to invest in digitalisation, sustainability and multimodal concepts.
