History
Hüttenwerke Krupp Mannesmann has existed as a participation company only since 1990, but it continues a long tradition in Duisburg. In 1909 the Essener company Schulz-Knaudt built a steelworks at the site in Duisburg-Huckingen. Mannesmann took over the Huckingen works in 1914. In 1929 a sinter plant, blast furnaces 1 & 2, and a Thomas steelworks were commissioned. In 1952 the works were incorporated into Mannesmann AG. A coking plant was commissioned in 1958, and the LD steelworks S1 in 1966. In 1970 there was a division of labor between Thyssen & Mannesmann. Blast furnace A was commissioned in 1973, blast furnace B in 1981, Rund 1 in 1982, and Rund 2 in 1984. In 1987 Krupp and Mannesmann decided to merge their Duisburg steel sites. In 1990 Krupp and Mannesmann founded the company Hüttenwerke Krupp Mannesmann. The Hüttenwerk Duisburg-Rheinhausen closed in 1993. Bramme 1 was commissioned in 2000. In 2006 HKM invested and replaced heavy oil injection in the blast furnace with coal injection. In 2010 HKM invested in expanding the coking plant. A new battery was commissioned in 2014, and a ladle heating station in 2020. In 2026 HKM will become a 100% company of the Salzgitter Group.
