H&R Group

H&R Group (H&R Gruppe) is a German specialty chemicals company whose history began on 16 December 1919, when Heinrich Hansen and Emil Rosenthal founded Hansen & Rosenthal in Hamburg. The company develops and produces chemical-pharmaceutical specialty products based on crude oil, including white oils, paraffins, plasticizers, process oils, cable filling compounds, and cosmetic and pharmaceutical specialties. Its products are used in more than 100 industries. The company is publicly listed (H&R GmbH & Co. KGaA) and its administrative headquarters has been located in Hamburg's HafenCity since July 2005.

The history of today's H&R begins with a small firm in Hamburg. On 16 December 1919, Heinrich Hansen and Emil Rosenthal founded the company Hansen & Rosenthal in Hamburg, laying the foundation for the company's success. In the following decades, H&R developed into a globally successful company with products such as white oils, paraffins, base oils, and plasticizers. A business relationship with Ölwerke Julius Schindler (OJS), founded in 1920, began very early and grew in importance over the following decades; medical white oils, for example, were produced there. Despite difficult post-war circumstances, the company developed successfully from the beginning. This continued when, in 1923, after co-founder Rosenthal left, Heinrich Hansen continued to run the business alone. His motto was: quality and absolute reliability. Steady growth and more employees soon made it necessary to move from the office in the 'Hopfensack' to larger premises at 'Großer Burstah' near Hamburg City Hall. After a new beginning in 1945 and the later relocation of the office to Ost-West-Straße, another move followed to the building at Heilholtkamp. Since July 2005, the administrative headquarters has been located in the newly developed Hamburg HafenCity, Am Sandtorkai, directly by the old historic Speicherstadt opposite the Elbphilharmonie. The company Hansen & Rosenthal always remained true to its Hanseatic tradition: down-to-earthness and cultivation of existing connections on the one hand, worldwide contacts and expansion of business relationships on the other.
