H&S Tee is a German tea company. The company Häußler & Sauter was founded in 1949 by Inge Sauter and has been family-owned for 60 years, now in its third generation. It began by portioning coffee and tea for retail sale, with tea proving the successful product; initially only black tea, soon also herbal and fruit teas. The company also developed tea bagging and wrapping machinery, with its PT-10 model achieving worldwide market success.

History

The company Häußler & Sauter was founded in 1949 by Inge Sauter and has been family-owned for 60 years, now in its third generation. It began with a small quantity of coffee and tea, portioned for retail sale; coffee proved unsuitable, while tea opened a varied world with great development opportunities — initially only black tea, soon also herbal and fruit tea. Initial financing was raised by Inge Sauter doing bookkeeping for craft businesses at night. Production began with pure manual work: tea was weighed with pharmacist scales, placed in manually formed gauze bags with a thread and label, and sealed with aluminum caps. Soon the founder's son, Gerhard Klar — then still a schoolboy — built the first simple devices for sealing filter-paper bags and dosing tea. His first constructed machines then took over portioning and packaging of the now well-known tea specialties. The design of all HST tea bag machines continues to be developed by senior head Dr. Gerhard Klar in the company's machine-building division. The machines are used in the company's own three production sites as well as elsewhere. The origins of HST machinery go back to 1949, when the company's founder, Ingeborg Sauter, began to pack and sell tea bags by hand. Already at that time, the first mechanical devices were developed to simplify the manual work. In the early years, small semi-automatic tea bagging machines were designed and built, soon used not only in-house but also by tea packers in Germany, Austria and Switzerland. The PT-5 was the first tea bag machine for single-chamber bags without thread and label, followed by the PT-10 with thread and label; this was the first HST model to be a worldwide market success, produced in larger numbers and sold worldwide. The PT-10 was replaced around 1972 by the PT-20 series, where the double chamber bag replaced the single chamber bag. Initially the PT-21 for so-called naked tea bags, the PT-25 for paper bags was added in the 1970s. At the beginning of the 1990s, the PT-33, a model for tea bags with single aroma protection, was developed to series production readiness. The growing number of tea packs sold necessitated the construction of the company's own wrapping machines (cellophane machines), such as the ZE-10 model built in the 1960s, followed by the high-speed ZE-30 wrapping machine, built from 1983 and sold in large numbers worldwide, especially to the food and cosmetics industry, but also for special applications such as tape-cassettes, CDs, DVDs.
