Overview
H. von Allwörden GmbH, also known as the Allwörden Group or Heinrich von Allwörden, is a large German bakery company headquartered in Mölln, Schleswig-Holstein, with its holding company HvA Holding GmbH based in Gadebusch. Founded in 1906 in Sterley by Heinrich von Allwörden, the company remained family-owned for five generations until Edeka Nord gradually acquired shares, becoming sole owner in 2022. The group operates hundreds of bakery branches across northern Germany, including Schleswig-Holstein, Hamburg, Mecklenburg-Vorpommern, and Lower Saxony, and employs around 2,000 people. It is known for its fresh baked goods sold through its own outlets and in Edeka supermarkets. The company has grown through acquisitions of regional competitors such as Bäckerei Knaack, Unser Norden bakeries, and parts of Stadtbäckerei Drave. Its product range includes bread, rolls, cakes, and pastries, and it also operates café locations. As part of Edeka Nord, it forms a central pillar of the cooperative's bakery operations.
History
The company was founded in 1906 in Sterley by Heinrich von Allwörden and remained in the possession of the von Allwörden family for five generations. Manfred and Ralf von Allwörden, great-great-grandsons of the founder, led the company in the fifth generation. Over the decades, von Allwörden repeatedly took over regional competitors and integrated them into its branch network. In 2008, the company acquired Bäckerei Knaack in Groß Grönau with 38 branches. In 2013, von Allwörden acquired 19 bakery branches operating under the Unser Norden brand from Kieler Coop eG. In March 2019, Edeka Nord acquired a 45% stake in von Allwörden. Simultaneously, von Allwörden took over all shares of Dallmeyers Backhus GmbH from Edeka Nord, with the agreement stipulating that the Dallmeyers Backhus brand would be retained. The Dallmeyer production site in Hohenwestedt was closed in June 2019. In 2020, von Allwörden took over eight of the eleven branches of the insolvent Stadtbäckerei Drave from Schenefeld. In 2010, during the restructuring of the Kamps Group, financial investor ECM Equity Capital Management sold the sales outlets in Hamburg, previously operated under the name Nur hier until 1997, to the von Allwörden family. They operate as Nur hier GmbH and are a 100% subsidiary of Heinrich von Allwörden GmbH. In March 2022, Edeka Nord acquired the remaining 55% of the Allwörden Group. Under the leadership of Roland Brückmann, Stefan Giese, and Arne Schröter, the Von-Allwörden Group was integrated into the structures of EDEKA Nord and now forms a central pillar of the company's revenue. As of the end of 2021, the group operated a total of 474 branches in four federal states (Schleswig-Holstein: 236, Lower Saxony: 33, Mecklenburg-Vorpommern: 21, and Hamburg: 186) and employed around 2,000 people.
