Overview

H2APEX is a German green-hydrogen company headquartered at Hans-Adam-Allee 1 in Rostock-Laage, Mecklenburg-Vorpommern. It develops, builds and operates decentralised green-hydrogen supply facilities for industry, mobility and infrastructure, offering turnkey solutions from first planning through to ongoing production. Its roots go back to the year 2000, when APEX Energy Teterow GmbH was founded in Mecklenburg-Vorpommern to build renewable-energy systems, initially focused on customised photovoltaic solutions. From 2012 the company redirected its research, development and engineering competence decisively towards hydrogen, working closely with the Leibniz Institute for Catalysis (LIKAT) in Rostock, Stralsund University of Applied Sciences and the IRES Institute. That research base produced, among other things, the patented salt-based chemical hydrogen storage technology that later became the subsidiary AKROS Energy. The company operates under the H2APEX brand across three business fields: EPC (development, planning and construction of hydrogen electrolysis plants and refuelling stations for its own operation and for customers), hydrogen production (production and sale of green hydrogen), and storage (certified carbon-fibre-reinforced Type IV 500-bar high-pressure storage as well as research into hydrogen storage in salt). Since 2021 it has operated a 2 MW electrolyser at its company headquarters with a public hydrogen refuelling station, trailer filling, a combined heat and power unit and a fuel cell. Since 2022 it has run ongoing hydrogen production at the Laage site, and since 2024 it has regularly supplied Rebus Regionalbus Rostock with locally produced green hydrogen, also operating the associated refuelling stations. The supplied H2 bus fleet has covered around 2 million kilometres. H2APEX is the operating hydrogen business associated with the listed H2APEX Group SCA, a Luxembourg société en commandite par actions. The German Wikipedia entry describes H2APEX as a joint venture of the H2APEX Group SCA and the hydrogen specialist APEX Group, listed on the regulated market. The company's main operating focus is Germany, where it employs roughly 150 people at two sites in Rostock and Rostock-Laage. In 2023 it reported revenue of EUR 15.3 million. Its subsidiaries include AKROS Energy, which is commercialising chemical hydrogen storage on a salt basis developed from research cooperation with LIKAT Rostock and which has a pilot plant running in Rostock, and HydroExceed, founded in 2022 as a spin-off in Rostock-Laage, which develops and produces high-efficiency Type IV 500-bar compressed-gas storage, from single tanks to scalable 20-foot container systems, with series production in Laage. As an IPCEI-funded project, H2APEX operates a large-scale electrolyser of up to 100 MW at its company site in Rostock-Laage, part of the eastern German hydrogen hub "doing hydrogen". In Lubmin it operates a large-scale electrolyser of up to 600 MW at the site of the former nuclear power plant. The company positions itself as a "Made in Germany" hydrogen specialist covering the full chain of development, construction and operation, and it maintains a compliance management system based on IDW auditing standard 980.

History

The operational core of H2APEX began in 2000, when APEX Energy Teterow GmbH was founded in Mecklenburg-Vorpommern with the aim of building renewable-energy systems that really worked. With no large capital backing and no ready-made infrastructure, the company relied on a clear technical conviction. Its focus was photovoltaics: customised system solutions for a growing market, energy-autonomous and operationally reliable. From the outset the company worked closely with research institutions, including the Leibniz Institute for Catalysis (LIKAT) in Rostock, Stralsund University of Applied Sciences and the IRES Institute. This attitude — research as a foundation rather than an accessory — remains part of the company's DNA. From 2012 the company redirected its research, development and engineering competence consistently towards hydrogen. This was not a reaction to a trend but a conviction that green hydrogen would be one of the supporting pillars of the energy transition. In close cooperation with LIKAT Rostock, foundations were laid that still have an effect today, including the patented salt storage technology from which AKROS Energy later emerged. At the same time, the company began building system competence for electrolysers, storage solutions and operating concepts. In 2018 a new production facility for energy systems was established at Hans-Adam-Allee in Rostock-Laage. Since 2021 H2APEX has operated a 2 MW electrolyser at its company headquarters with a public hydrogen refuelling station, trailer filling, a combined heat and power unit and a fuel cell. Since 2022 it has run ongoing hydrogen production at the Laage site, and the supplied H2 bus fleet has covered around 2 million kilometres. In 2022 HydroExceed was founded as a spin-off in Rostock-Laage, developing and producing high-efficiency Type IV 500-bar compressed-gas storage, carbon-fibre-reinforced and standards-compliant, from single tanks to scalable 20-foot container systems, with series production in Laage. AKROS Energy, meanwhile, grew out of the research cooperation with LIKAT Rostock, commercialising chemical hydrogen storage on a salt basis — pressureless, non-toxic and highly efficient — with a pilot plant already running in Rostock at technology readiness level 6 and moving towards level 7. Since 2024 the company has regularly supplied Rebus Regionalbus Rostock with locally produced green hydrogen and also operates the associated refuelling stations. The German Wikipedia entry notes that H2APEX, formerly Exceet Group, is a joint venture of the H2APEX Group SCA and the hydrogen specialist APEX Group, listed on the regulated market, and that the holding company has the Luxembourg legal form of an SCA. In 2023 the company reported revenue of EUR 15.3 million and employed around 150 people at two sites in Rostock and Rostock-Laage.
