Overview
Hacı Bekir is a Turkish confectionery establishment whose history reaches from the Ottoman era to the present day. Founded in 1777 by Hacı Bekir Efendi, it produces traditional sweets such as lokum, akide şekeri, helva and ezme. The company is currently managed by its fourth and fifth generations, overseeing one factory, two production facilities and four retail stores, and it exports to markets including New Zealand, Malaysia, the Middle East, Norway, the United Kingdom and the United States.
History
Hacı Bekir Efendi founded the confectionery shop in 1777 in Bahçekapı, Istanbul, where he produced sweets in the back section of the shop. Over time the shop was enlarged from its first 33 m² section and, with the addition of the neighboring herbalist shop, became today's 88 m² store. It has been used as a confectionery shop by the Hacı Bekir family for five generations since 1777. The company's products, including lokum, akide şekeri, helva and ezme, became part of Ottoman-Turkish culture and gained the trust and appreciation of Ottoman Palace circles; Hacıbekir was appointed as Şekerci Başı (Chief Confectioner) for three generations with the palace's support, supervision and encouragement. The company is currently managed by its fourth and fifth generations, who oversee one factory, two production facilities and four retail stores, and it exports to markets from New Zealand to Malaysia, the Middle East, Norway, the United Kingdom and the United States.
