Overview

Hacker Journal is an Italian magazine dedicated to hacking, information security and cybersecurity culture. It was founded in 2002 and is described by its publisher as the monthly point of reference for true information-security enthusiasts. It is widely regarded as the first Italian hacking magazine. The title has changed publishers several times: it was initially published by 4ever, then passed to Sprea Editori, later to WLF Publishing, and after a closure between 2011 and 2018 returned to Sprea. The magazine is currently produced by Sprea Editori spa. From May 2002 the magazine appeared on newsstands on Thursdays on a fortnightly schedule, although in its final issues before the 2011 closure the frequency had become monthly. From issue 189 it adopted a Creative Commons licence. From issue 195, following problems during website updates linked to various attacks and the resulting departure of the old community (which created an unofficial forum), the magazine relaunched with a new graphic design and additional features and services for both the website and the magazine, aimed at improving interaction between users and staff and involving the whole community. Issue 200 was published on 29 April 2010, containing the first part of a C programming course. From issue 202 Hacker Journal became monthly because of the publishing crisis, and it was finally closed in June 2011, with the website containing all back issues and the forum with thousands of discussions also removed. In December 2017 the historic domain hackerjournal.it became active again, and on 5 January 2018 issue 216 was published, available in print or digital form. The magazine is currently produced by Sprea Editori spa on a bimonthly basis. Its content has traditionally catered to both advanced users and beginners, dividing articles into three difficulty levels: Newbie, Mid Hacking and Hard Hacking, covering code, security, modding and overclocking. A distinctive feature of the magazine was the definition of the word hacker printed at the top of the second page of every issue, above the editorial: 'A person who enjoys exploring the details of programmable systems and how to stretch their capabilities, as opposed to most users, who prefer to learn only the minimum necessary.' The current website hackerjournal.it operates as a news and cybersecurity portal, carrying news, articles, forum discussions and subscription information. Recent coverage has included alleged FBI data leaks, phishing campaigns using SVG attachments, Revolut data obtained through false requests, cloud and cybersecurity vouchers for SMEs, Stuxnet on GitHub, Gmail risks via ChatGPT, early-access app anomalies and the NIS2 directive. The site also promotes the print/digital issue on sale, for example issue 291 available digitally from 2 September and at newsstands from 10 September, and hosts an active forum where readers discuss topics such as hiding one's IP, using a VPN, recovering a hacked email account and the state of hacking today.
