Overview

Haendler & Natermann is a German packaging manufacturer based in Hann. Münden, Lower Saxony, with a second production site in Heiligenstadt, Thuringia, which began operations in 2010. The company produces and supplies aluminum and paper labels, primarily for the beverage industry, and delivers to more than 120 countries. It operates an in-house research department that develops environmentally friendly and innovative manufacturing methods on behalf of customers. In 2012, the company generated annual sales of EUR 280 million. The company's origins trace back to a trading business established in Münden in 1788 by Johann Georg Haendler. In 1825, his brother-in-law Friedrich August Natermann, from Zellerfeld, joined the firm. Initially, the business traded long-distance goods such as coffee, sugar, and tea, as well as mining products including metals from the Harz region. Upon joining, Natermann began producing lead and tin foils used for packaging snuff tobacco. Over the decades, the company evolved into a packaging specialist. In 1970, the family business was sold to Frankfurter Metallgesellschaft AG. The long-standing production of hunting and sport ammunition, including H&N diabolo air gun pellets, was separated in 1991 into the independent H&N Sport GmbH with 42 employees, and in January 2008 it was sold to a Bavarian entrepreneur. From 2009, the company was part of Constantia Flexibles under OEP (One Equity Partners); from 2014 to October 2017, the Wendel Group was the main owner. Since November 1, 2017, Multi-Color Corporation has been the main owner. The company was merged with 12 other production sites into Constantia Flexibles' Labels division, which Wendel sold a majority stake in to Multi-Color Corporation on November 1, 2017, retaining only a 16.6% share. Today, Haendler & Natermann operates as part of Multi-Color Corporation, continuing its focus on label solutions for the beverage industry and other sectors, with a strong emphasis on innovation and environmental responsibility.

History

The history of Haendler & Natermann begins in 1788 with the establishment of a trading business in Münden by Johann Georg Haendler. In 1825, his brother-in-law Friedrich August Natermann, originally from Zellerfeld, joined the company. At that time, the business traded long-distance goods such as coffee, sugar, and tea, as well as mining products like metals from the Harz region. Upon his entry, Natermann initiated the production of lead and tin foils, which were used for packaging snuff tobacco. In 1848, Carl Georg August Natermann, son of the co-founder, acquired the 24.5-meter-high Fährenpfortenturm, a medieval city wall tower, and after raising it by 11.3 meters, used it as a shot tower. A casting room was set up on the top floor where molten hot lead was poured through a sieve and, falling from a great height, formed round shot pellets. This production site, also known as the Hagelturm, is now a working museum. From 1849, shot for hunting purposes was produced. Other branches included a lead pipe foundry and a rolling mill. As early as 1888, the local newspaper Mündenschen Nachrichten described the company as the most important in the town. Later, Haendler & Natermann continuously developed into a packaging specialist. In 1970, the family business was sold to Frankfurter Metallgesellschaft AG. The long-standing production of hunting and sport ammunition, including H&N diabolo air gun pellets, was separated in 1991 into the independent H&N Sport GmbH with 42 employees. In January 2008, it was sold to a Bavarian entrepreneur. From 2009, the company was part of Constantia Flexibles under OEP (One Equity Partners). From 2014 to October 2017, the Wendel Group was the main owner. The company was merged with 12 other production sites into Constantia Flexibles' Labels division. On November 1, 2017, Wendel sold a majority stake in the Labels division to Multi-Color Corporation, retaining only a 16.6% share. Since then, Multi-Color Corporation has been the main owner. In 2010, a second production site in Heiligenstadt, Thuringia, was put into operation. In 2012, the company achieved annual sales of EUR 280 million.
