Overview
Haier is a Chinese multinational home-appliance and consumer-electronics brand group headquartered in Qingdao, Shandong. Its principal activities include the design, manufacture, marketing, and sale of refrigerators, freezers, washing machines, dryers, air conditioners, microwave ovens, televisions, computers, mobile phones, gaming computers, and connected-home products. The group operates through a portfolio that includes the Haier brand as well as Casarte, Leader, GE Appliances, Fisher & Paykel, Aqua, Candy, Evo, and ThundeRobot. Haier Smart Home, a major listed affiliate in which Haier Group holds a substantial stake, is the principal vehicle for much of the appliance business. The company traces its roots to a refrigerator factory in Qingdao that originated in the 1920s and later became a state-owned enterprise. By the early 1980s, the factory was heavily indebted, poorly equipped, and producing very limited volumes. Zhang Ruimin was appointed to manage it in 1984, the year generally treated as Haier's founding date. His early program emphasized quality control, production discipline, and organizational reform. A widely cited episode involved the destruction of defective refrigerators, an act intended to demonstrate that poor quality would no longer be tolerated. Haier subsequently became one of the earliest Chinese manufacturers to obtain ISO 9001 certification. The company initially operated as Qingdao Refrigerator Co. and formed a technology and equipment partnership with Germany's Liebherr. The name Haier was derived from the final syllables of the Chinese transliteration of Liebherr. After returning to profitability in the mid-1980s, the company expanded by taking over struggling appliance businesses in Qingdao. Its scope broadened from refrigerators to air conditioners, freezers, washing machines, microwave ovens, and other household products. The corporate name was simplified to Haier in 1992, while the company continued to build a multi-brand and multi-category structure. Haier began international expansion in the 1990s, establishing or acquiring production and commercial operations in Southeast Asia, North America, Europe, the Middle East, Africa, and South Asia. Its United States strategy initially focused on compact refrigerators and wine-cellar products before expanding into full-size appliances. It opened a manufacturing facility in Camden, South Carolina, in 2000. Over time, the group pursued acquisitions and partnerships to obtain local brands, technology, distribution, and manufacturing capacity. Important transactions included the acquisition of Fisher & Paykel's appliance business, Sanyo's Southeast Asian appliance operations, GE Appliances, and Italy's Candy group. In 2024, Haier Smart Home agreed to acquire Carrier Commercial Refrigeration. Haier's brand architecture combines global and regional brands rather than relying exclusively on one name. Haier is positioned as a broad international appliance brand, while Casarte serves a more premium segment and Leader addresses value-oriented consumers in selected markets. GE Appliances, Fisher & Paykel, Candy, Aqua, and other brands retain local recognition and differentiated product identities. The group also operates in gaming hardware through ThundeRobot, founded in 2014. Since the mid-2010s, Haier has emphasized the Internet of Things, connected appliances, and smart-home ecosystems. It has worked on integrating sensors, connectivity, voice control, cloud services, and appliance-management platforms across categories such as air care, water, clothes care, security, health, and information. The company has also promoted environmental initiatives involving energy efficiency, recycling, and climate-related innovation. Haier remains an active global brand and a major participant in the appliance industry, although its international operations have also generated criticism concerning data security, software access, and continued activity in Russia after…
History
Haier's institutional roots lie in a refrigerator factory established in Qingdao during the 1920s. After 1949, the facility became part of China's state-owned industrial system. By the early 1980s it was in severe difficulty: infrastructure was deteriorated, management systems were weak, debt was substantial, and production was extremely low. In 1984, Zhang Ruimin was appointed to manage the factory, then known as Qingdao Refrigerator Co. The business used international cooperation to improve its products and processes. A partnership with Germany's Liebherr supplied technology and manufacturing equipment, and products initially carried a name based on the Chinese transliteration of Liebherr. The transfer was accompanied by stronger inspection procedures and new management practices. The factory returned to profitability in the mid-1980s, and Haier's sales expanded rapidly. The company made quality control central to its identity, illustrated by Zhang's decision to destroy defective refrigerators in front of employees. This campaign helped distinguish Haier from many domestic manufacturers whose products were then often viewed as less reliable than foreign alternatives. During the late 1980s and 1990s, Haier expanded through the consolidation of troubled Qingdao appliance businesses. It took control of companies involved in microwave ovens, air conditioners, freezers, and washing machines, and changed its name first to Qingdao Haier Group and later to Haier. The company also began exporting and developing overseas commercial operations. Its Shanghai listing in 1993 created a public-market platform for the refrigerator business. Internationalization accelerated during the 1990s and 2000s. Haier established production facilities in Indonesia and the Philippines, entered the United States, and built a factory in South Carolina. It also developed operations in Pakistan, Jordan, India, Africa, and Europe. In North America, the company initially concentrated on compact products and specialized refrigeration before competing in larger appliance categories. Haier's approach combined direct manufacturing, local subsidiaries, partnerships, and the acquisition of established brands. The group pursued several important transactions in the 2010s. It acquired Fisher & Paykel's appliance business and Sanyo's Southeast Asian appliance manufacturing operations in 2012. In 2016, it purchased GE Appliances from General Electric, giving it a substantial North American platform and a well-known local brand. In 2018, it acquired Candy, strengthening its European position. Haier also developed ThundeRobot, a gaming-computer and accessories brand founded in 2014. Haier's corporate structure includes Haier Group and publicly traded affiliates, particularly Haier Smart Home and Haier Electronics Group. Haier Smart Home is the main listed appliance vehicle and has traded through Chinese and European market arrangements; Haier Electronics Group was listed in Hong Kong. The wider group has used a multi-brand strategy in which Haier, Casarte, Leader, GE Appliances, Fisher & Paykel, Aqua, Candy, and Evo serve different markets and price or design positions. From 2015 onward, Haier increasingly focused on connected appliances and the Internet of Things. It worked with external technology ecosystems to add connectivity, modules, voice capabilities, and cloud-linked services to appliances across air care, water, laundry, security, health, and information categories. The company has also publicized sustainability work involving energy conservation, recycling, and climate-related technology. In 2024, it agreed to acquire Carrier Commercial Refrigeration, signaling continued expansion into commercial cooling and refrigeration. Haier has nevertheless faced reputational and governance challenges. German media reported allegations in 2014 that some Haier smartphones and tablets were shipped with malware pre-installed. In 2024, open-source developers criticized the company's legal action against projects that enabled local control of connected appliances. Haier has also faced criticism for expanding in Russia despite sanctions and corporate-responsibility concerns following the invasion of Ukraine. These issues illustrate tensions between a cloud-centered smart-appliance business, open software communities, data and security expectations, and the commercial priorities of a multinational manufacturer.
