Overview
Halberstädter Würstchen- und Konservenvertriebs GmbH is a traditional family company from Halberstadt with unique products. The company was founded on November 25, 1883, when Friedrich Heine produced the first famous Halberstädter sausages in a bachelor's kitchen with a self-built smoking system. The company later became the largest meat factory in Europe.
History
The company was founded on November 25, 1883, when Friedrich Heine produced the first famous Halberstädter sausages in a bachelor's kitchen with a self-built smoking system. Ten years after founding, Heine employed five workers and sold more than 1,000 pairs of sausages per day. From 1894, Heine attempted to preserve the sausages, initially without success. In June 1896, an order for 40,000 pairs of sausages for the Kyffhäuser monument dedication prompted Heine to resume preservation attempts. After numerous attempts, preservation succeeded. On the day of the dedication, 18 sellers had 30,000 pairs of preserved and 10,000 pairs of freshly smoked sausages ready, but a storm dispersed the crowd. Heine feared ruin, but the sausages proved to be preserved.
