Overview

The Hallerangerhaus is a mountain hut (Schutzhütte) of the German Alpine Club (Deutscher Alpenverein, DAV), Sektion Schwaben, located at 1,768 metres above sea level on the Kohlerboden in the heart of the Karwendel mountains in Tyrol, Austria. It sits at the foot of the Speckkarspitze and the Kleiner Lafatscher, between the Hinterautal-Vomper chain and the Gleirsch-Halltal chain. Because of its central location and the many tour options, the hut is an excellent base for multi-day mountaineering in the Karwendel. It also serves day visitors who mountain-bike from Scharnitz through the Hinterautal and return the same day. In winter, an unlocked, heatable room in an outbuilding is available for ski tourers, provided avalanche conditions are safe. A few metres above the house, the Lafatscher Bach rises, the longest source stream of the Isar. The first hut was built in 1901 on the Kohlerboden and served as a base for first ascensionists, adventurers and explorers. The original handwritten entries of the mountaineering elite of the time can be read in the tour book at the Hallerangerhaus. In the summer of 1915, construction of a new hut began after an avalanche destroyed the previous building in the winter before. Due to the turmoil of the First World War, the new hut could only be officially inaugurated in 1924. The dining room was enlarged in 1964, and the power supply was modernised in 1972. In the 1980s, the old mule stable was converted into a winter room, and a tenant's apartment was installed. The wastewater disposal problem was solved, and shower facilities are available. In 2017, the house was extended with an annex and a sun terrace. The Hallerangerhaus is equipped with 76 sleeping places (52 beds and 24 dormitory places). It also has a small, well-equipped seminar room that can accommodate 15 to 20 people, available by prior reservation by email. There is no internet and no Wi-Fi at the hut. Dogs are no longer accepted. As a DAV hut, the rules of the alpine clubs apply, including hut quiet at 22:00. The hut is a base for long-distance trails such as the Munich–Venice Dream Path, the Adlerweg, and the Karwendel Höhenweg. The sunny terrace invites guests to forget the stress and hectic of everyday life, enjoy homemade food, and explore the unique landscape around the Hallerangerhaus.

History

The Hallerangerhaus was first built in 1901 on the Kohlerboden at the foot of the Speckkarspitze and Kleiner Lafatscher in the Karwendel mountains. It served as a base for first ascensionists, adventurers and explorers; the original handwritten entries of the mountaineering elite of that era are preserved in the hut's tour book. In the winter of 1914, an avalanche destroyed the hut. Construction of a new hut began in the summer of 1915 at a safer location above the old site. Because of the turmoil of the First World War, the new building could only be officially inaugurated in the summer of 1924. In 1964, a new dining room was added. In 1972, the power supply was modernised. In the 1980s, the old mule stable was converted into a winter room, and a tenant's apartment was installed; the wastewater disposal problem was also solved, and shower facilities were added. In 2017, the house was extended with an annex and a sun terrace. The hut is operated by the Sektion Schwaben of the Deutscher Alpenverein (German Alpine Club). It lies at 1,768 m above sea level in the heart of the Karwendel in Tyrol, Austria, between the Hinterautal-Vomper chain and the Gleirsch-Halltal chain. It is not to be confused with the nearby Hallerangeralm. The hut has 76 sleeping places (52 beds and 24 dormitory places) and a small seminar room for 15 to 20 people. There is no internet or Wi-Fi, and dogs are no longer accepted. As a DAV hut, alpine club rules apply, including quiet hours at 22:00. The hut is a base for long-distance trails such as the Munich–Venice Dream Path, the Adlerweg, and the Karwendel Höhenweg. Access is possible from Scharnitz through the Hinterautal (5 hours on foot, or mountain bike to Kastenalm then steep ramp or footpath), from Sankt Magdalena im Halltal over the Lafatscher Joch (2.5 hours), and from Vomperberg over the Katzenleiter, Vomper Loch and Überschalljoch (8–9 hours). Transitions to other huts include the Bettelwurfhütte (2.5 hours), Pfeishütte (3 hours), Karwendelhaus (8–9 hours, difficult), and Lamsenjochhütte (10 hours, difficult). Summit climbs from the hut include the Sunntigerspitze (2,321 m), Speckkarspitze (2,621 m), Kleiner Lafatscher (2,636 m), Großer Lafatscher (2,696 m), Großer Bettelwurf (2,726 m), and Birkkarspitze (2,749 m).
