History

In 1859, Lyon created its first covered market at place des Cordeliers, gathering under a metal hall stalls that had usually been outdoors, to make daily life easier for merchants and customers. In 1971, the City decided to innovate again with a large-scale project in the emerging Part Dieu district; on 1 January 1971, the Halles de Lyon opened, with 13,500 m² over 3 levels at the intersection of Garibaldi, Lafayette and Bonnel. In 2004, the City of Lyon began a major project of renovation, restructuring and bringing the site up to European standards; two years later the Halles de Lyon revealed a fully redesigned design and spaces.
