Overview
Hamburg Wasser supplies drinking water and handles wastewater for Hamburg and the surrounding metropolitan region. Its drinking water is drawn from groundwater and treated in a nature-oriented way, and the company states that it goes beyond the requirements of the German Drinking Water Ordinance in its own controls. It offers customer and business portals for managing accounts, meter readings, consumption, and bills, and it traces its public water management history back over 180 years.
History
Hamburg Wasser traces its public water management history back over 180 years. After the Great Fire of May 1842 destroyed much of inner Hamburg and the firefighting water supply failed, the Bürgerschaft decided to create a new state-run water supply network for the whole city and to regulate wastewater disposal. The Hamburger Stadtwasserkunst was founded that same year, with British engineer William Lindley responsible for design and implementation. His plan covered both a central drinking water supply and citywide drainage via a gravity sewer system. Hamburg's first sewer, called a Siel, went into operation in 1843, and supply from the first waterworks in Rothenburgsort followed in 1848.
