Hamburger Stadtentwässerung

Hamburger Stadtentwässerung operates under the HAMBURG WASSER brand as the drinking water supplier and wastewater disposal provider for Hamburg and the metropolitan region. Its services include customer and business portals for managing accounts, meter readings, consumption, advance payments and invoices, as well as telephone contact, on-site customer centers, price information, construction site and fault reporting, and supply and disposal services in the metropolitan region. The utility traces its public water management history back over 180 years, beginning with the Great Fire of 1842, which led to the founding of the Hamburger Stadtwasserkunst and the construction of Hamburg's first sewer, called a Siel, in 1843.

Hamburg's public water management history spans over 180 years. On the morning of 5 May 1842, a warehouse fire broke out; four days later the Great Fire had destroyed the inner-city area of Hamburg, killing over 50 people and leaving around 20,000 homeless. Firefighting water supply had failed, and much of the privately organized water supply was destroyed. The Bürgerschaft had to reorganize drinking and firefighting water supply and adopted a plan for a new state water supply network to serve the entire city, along with regulated wastewater disposal and a network of hydrants called Notpfosten. In the same year, the Hamburger Stadtwasserkunst was founded, with British engineer William Lindley responsible for design and implementation. His plan included both a central drinking water supply and area-wide drainage via a gravity sewer system. Hamburg's first sewer, called a Siel, went into operation in 1843, followed in 1848 by supply from the first waterworks in Rothenburgsort.
