Overview
Hamburg Wasser supplies drinking water and handles wastewater for Hamburg and the surrounding metropolitan region. It draws drinking water from groundwater, treats it in a nature-oriented way, and offers customer services including an online customer portal and a business portal. The company traces its public water management history back over 180 years, beginning with the Great Fire of 1842 and the founding of the Hamburger Stadtwasserkunst that same year.
History
Hamburg's public water management history spans over 180 years. On the morning of 5 May 1842 a warehouse caught fire; four days later the Great Fire had destroyed Hamburg's inner city, killing over 50 people and leaving around 20,000 homeless. Firefighting water supply had failed, and much of the privately organized water supply was destroyed. The Bürgerschaft had to reorganize drinking and firefighting water supply and adopted a plan for a new state water supply network to serve the entire city, along with regulated wastewater disposal and a network of hydrants. In the same year the Hamburger Stadtwasserkunst was founded, with British engineer William Lindley responsible for design and implementation. His plan included both a central drinking water supply and area-wide drainage via a gravity sewer system. Hamburg's first sewer, called a Siel, went into operation in 1843, followed in 1848 by supply from the first waterworks in Rothenburgsort.
