Overview

Vertex Co., Ltd. (ベルテクス株式会社) is a Japanese manufacturer of civil-engineering and infrastructure materials headquartered in Kojimachi, Chiyoda City, Tokyo. Its business centres on precast concrete products and construction methods for roads and agriculture, development and building, stormwater and sewerage, storage and infiltration, railways, repair and reinforcement, and slope disaster prevention. The product catalogue spans box culverts, Hume pipes, manholes, retaining walls, storage and infiltration systems, channels and gutters, vehicle guard fences, railway products, repair and reinforcement methods, inspection and diagnosis, and countermeasures against landslides, debris flows, rockfalls, avalanches, ground reinforcement, vegetation and tsunamis. The company presents itself under the brand statement "安心のカタチを造る" (roughly, "creating the shape of peace of mind"), framing its mission as helping people live safely anywhere in a country repeatedly struck by natural disasters. Its quality-assurance policy emphasises market- and customer-oriented factory operation, internal standardisation and quality control, manufacturing innovation for high functionality and cost efficiency, and the development of employees with fairness, ethics and technical skill. Vertex's corporate lineage is a consolidation of several older Japanese concrete businesses. The history traces back to a sole proprietorship founded in 1924 by Toragoro Senba, and to the establishment in 1935 of Nihon Zenith Pipe Co., Ltd. in Kobe for the manufacture and sale of Hume pipes. Parallel lines include Haneda Concrete Industry Co., Ltd. (renamed in 1935) and Hokuriku Concrete Industry Co., Ltd. (founded 1955 in what is now Echizen, Fukui). These businesses were reorganised over the 2000s and 2010s: Hanex Co., Ltd. and Nihon Zenith Pipe agreed on a comprehensive business alliance in 2009, a holding company named Zenith Haneda Co., Ltd. was established in 2011, and in 2014 the three operating companies merged and renamed as Zenith Haneda Co., Ltd. In 2018 the holding company became Zenith Haneda Holdings Co., Ltd., and a joint share transfer with Hokukon created Vertex Corporation as a wholly owning parent. In 2021 the two companies merged and renamed as Vertex Co., Ltd. Today Vertex operates as part of the Vertex Group and markets its products and construction methods to public infrastructure, railway and disaster-prevention customers in Japan. Its recent news highlights include third-party certification for a new-standard high-energy rockfall protection fence, a disaster-themed television feature on its flood-countermeasure products, and the development of a new sound-insulation wall method. The company also lists inspection DX and a lactic-acid bacteria business among its other activities.

History

Vertex's history is a consolidation of several Japanese concrete-products businesses whose roots reach back to the early twentieth century. The company's own chronology begins in the 1920s with a sole proprietorship founded in 1924 by Toragoro Senba. In 1935, Nihon Zenith Pipe Co., Ltd. was established in Karumo-jima, Kobe, to manufacture and sell Hume pipes. A parallel line, Haneda Concrete Industry Works, was reorganised as a company in 1934 and renamed Haneda Concrete Industry Co., Ltd. in 1935; in 1940 it moved its head office to Tokyo, and in 1941 Haneda Hume Pipe Co., Ltd. was established in Hino, Tokyo (then Minamitama District) to make Hume pipes and secondary concrete products. In the post-war decades the businesses broadened their product ranges. Hokuriku Concrete Industry Co., Ltd. was founded in 1955 in Takefu, Fukui (now Echizen). Haneda Hume Pipe was listed on the Tokyo Stock Exchange over-the-counter market in 1959 and moved to the Second Section of the Tokyo Stock Exchange in 1961. New products followed: architectural and revetment blocks in 1956, road and agricultural blocks in 1959, box culverts in 1975, Uni-Hole in 1980, semi-shield pipes in 1981, variable gutters in 1981, infiltration pipes in 1982, and Eshole in 1989. The company developed The Wall retaining wall and obtained construction-minister certification in 1984, developed fire water tanks in 1984, changed its trade name to Hokukon Co., Ltd. in 1985, and moved its head office to Shinjuku, Tokyo, also in 1985. It developed non-watering snow-melting panels in 1987. In the 1990s the company introduced modular channel technology from France in 1993, began rockfall protection fence and disaster-prevention operations in 1994, obtained construction-minister certification for The Wall II in 1992, developed the M.V.P. System in 1996, and began repair and reinforcement work for agricultural waterways in 1998. In the 2000s it renamed itself Hanex Co., Ltd. in 2001, began manufacturing and selling SJ-BOX in 2003, listed on the JASDAQ Securities Exchange in 2004, and developed Spanzer Wall in 2001, drop manholes in 2003, Laxis in 2006 and Double Boat in 2008. Consolidation accelerated at the end of the decade. In 2009 Hanex and Nihon Zenith Pipe agreed on a comprehensive business alliance aimed at management integration. In 2011 a holding company, Zenith Haneda Co., Ltd., was established as the holding company of Hanex and Nihon Zenith Pipe, and a share-exchange agreement was signed with Haneda Concrete Industry Co., Ltd. In 2013 the head office moved to Chiyoda City, Tokyo. In 2014 the three companies merged and changed their trade name to Zenith Haneda Co., Ltd., with its head office in Chiyoda City. In 2018 the holding company was renamed Zenith Haneda Holdings Co., Ltd., and through a joint share transfer with Hokukon Co., Ltd. it established Vertex Corporation as a wholly owning parent. In 2021 the two companies merged and renamed as Vertex Co., Ltd. In the 2010s and 2020s the company continued to develop new products and methods, including the existing fire-water-tank reinforcement spring-post method in 2010, the HD Wall in 2018 with MLIT minister certification, and a flexible seismic precast bottom culvert in 2018. Recent news includes third-party certification for a new-standard high-energy rockfall protection fence, a new sound-insulation wall method, and a disaster-prevention television feature on its flood-countermeasure products.
