Overview
Hankyu 32-bandai (阪急32番街) is a restaurant-floor commercial facility located inside the Hankyu Grand Building in Umeda, Kita-ku, Osaka, Japan. It opened on 8 August 1977 together with the Hankyu Grand Building itself, and its name derives from the fact that the building has 32 floors. The facility occupies the 1st and 2nd floors as well as floors 27 through 31, and houses roughly 34 restaurants and dining tenants. It is part of the Hankyu group's commercial operations in the Umeda terminal area, one of the busiest retail and dining districts in western Japan. In 2012, marking its 35th anniversary, the facility expanded its 1st and 2nd floors and fully renovated floors 27 to 31, reopening on 12 July 2012 under the refreshed brand name 'Hankyu 32-bandai Sora-niwa Dining' (空庭ダイニング). The 1st and 2nd floor sections opened on 20 August of that year. The complex is known for its concentration of restaurants and bars on the upper floors of the Hankyu Grand Building, offering views over the Umeda skyline and serving office workers, shoppers and travelers passing through Osaka-Umeda Station. From March 1996 until 25 March 2015, floor 30 hosted 'Hankyu 32-bandai Comic House', a comic-book specialty store operated by Kinokuniya; it was closed and consolidated into the Kinokuniya Grand Front Osaka store. Today the facility continues to operate as a dining destination, with opening hours generally from 11:00 to 23:00, though individual tenants may differ. It is directly connected to major transport nodes including Hankyu Railway, Hanshin Main Line and Midosuji Subway Line's Umeda Station, as well as JR West's Osaka Station.
History
Hankyu 32-bandai opened on 8 August 1977, the same day the Hankyu Grand Building opened in the Umeda district of Kita-ku, Osaka. Its name comes from the building's 32 floors. The facility was laid out across the 1st and 2nd floors and floors 27 through 31, and it housed around 34 restaurants and dining tenants. It formed part of the Hankyu railway group's commercial development around Osaka-Umeda Station, one of the largest terminal station complexes in Japan. In March 1996, a comic-book specialty store called 'Hankyu 32-bandai Comic House' (阪急32番街コミックハウス), operated by Kinokuniya, opened on the 30th floor. It served comic readers in the Umeda area for nearly two decades. In 2012, as the facility approached its 35th anniversary, it carried out a major renovation: the 1st and 2nd floors were expanded, and floors 27 through 31 were fully renewed. On 12 July 2012 it reopened under the new brand name 'Hankyu 32-bandai Sora-niwa Dining' (空庭ダイニング). The 1st and 2nd floor sections opened on 20 August 2012. The renovation repositioned the complex as a modern dining destination within the Hankyu Grand Building. On 25 March 2015, the Kinokuniya Comic House on the 30th floor closed and was consolidated into the Kinokuniya Grand Front Osaka store. The dining floors continued to operate, and the facility remains an active restaurant complex in Umeda, with general opening hours of 11:00 to 23:00, subject to individual tenant schedules. It is directly accessible from Hankyu Railway, Hanshin Main Line and Midosuji Subway Line's Umeda Station, as well as JR West's Osaka Station.
