Overview

The Hans Wödl Hütte is a mountain hut (Schutzhütte) in the Schladminger Tauern range of the Austrian state of Styria. It is one of three huts operated by the Alpine Gesellschaft Preintaler (AGP), a mountaineering association founded in 1885. The hut sits at an elevation of 1,533 metres, just north of the Hüttensee lake near the end of the Seewigtal valley. It was built starting in 1896 as the second shelter of the AGP and opened on 6 June 1897. It is named after Hans Wödl (1863–1937), a pioneering explorer of the Schladminger Tauern and then-chairman of the AGP. Like the association's other huts, it originally operated on the Pott'sche System, a self-service provisioning arrangement with payment by postal order, and it has been staffed in summer since 1903. Today the hut serves hikers and mountaineers, offering overnight accommodation and refreshments during the summer season. It is a key waypoint on the Schladminger-Tauern-Höhenweg and connects to other huts such as the Preintalerhütte and Gollinghütte. The hut is a building in Gössenberg, Austria, and remains an active part of the AGP's network of alpine facilities.

History

The Hans Wödl Hütte was established by the Alpine Gesellschaft Preintaler (AGP), a mountaineering association founded in 1885. Construction began in 1896 as the second shelter built by the AGP, and the hut was officially opened on 6 June 1897. It was named in honour of Hans Wödl (1863–1937), who was instrumental in opening up the Schladminger Tauern and served as chairman (Obmann) of the AGP. Like the association's other huts, it was initially designed according to the Pott'sche System, a self-service model where provisions were taken by guests and paid for later by postal money order. From 1903 the hut was managed during the summer months. The hut is located at 1,533 metres above sea level, just north of the Hüttensee and about 25 metres above the lake, near the end of the Seewigtal valley. It remains one of three huts operated by the AGP, alongside the Preintalerhütte and the Gollinghütte. The AGP continues to maintain and operate the hut, with seasonal opening periods announced on its website; for 2026 the Hans Wödl Hütte is scheduled to be open from 5 June to 5 October. The hut serves as a base for hikes to peaks such as the Höchstein (2,543 m) and the Hochwildstelle (2,747 m), and as a waypoint on the Schladminger-Tauern-Höhenweg and on multi-day tours connecting to other alpine huts.
