Overview

HARTL HAUS is an Austrian manufacturer of prefabricated houses built in timber-frame (Holzriegel) construction. According to its own materials, it describes itself as Austria's oldest prefabricated house company with its own joinery, producing around 300 house units per year at its site in Echsenbach in the Waldviertel. Its range spans turnkey bungalows, lower-cost two-storey houses and individually planned single-family homes, and it also produces products such as windows, front doors, kitchens, interior doors and furniture for customers beyond prefabricated-house buyers. The company traces its origins to 1897, when Wenzl Hartl founded a small carpentry business in Vienna.

History

The history of HARTL HAUS begins in 1897, when Wenzl Hartl founded a small carpentry business in Vienna with the aim of simplifying house construction through a revolutionary building method. In 1910 the first HARTL HAUS in prefabricated construction was built; according to the company it can still be seen near the works today. In 1924 the present company site in Echsenbach was founded. In the 1960s HARTL HAUS was the first producer on the prefabricated house market, and in 1979 it was a co-founder of the Austrian Prefabricated House Association (Österreichischer Fertighausverband). In 1985 the Swiss Talog AG took over HARTL HAUS. In 1990 innovations such as the Ökowand, Powertherm-Wand and gypsum fibre boards set new standards. In 2005 the first klima:aktiv prefabricated house in Austria was built in only four months. In 2015 the company joined the Bundesverband Deutscher Fertigbau, and in 2020 the new 5,300 m² joinery was completed. In 2025, with Yves Suter and a new management team, HARTL HAUS began a new era, and a 130-year anniversary celebration is noted for 2027.
