Harzwasserwerke

Harzwasserwerke GmbH is a German water utility based in Hildesheim. It describes itself as the largest water supplier in Lower Saxony and among the ten largest in Germany. From its headquarters in Hildesheim and 20 further locations in Lower Saxony, around 280 employees operate a connected system of six reservoirs (Talsperren) in the West Harz with three associated waterworks, four groundwater works, and a transport pipeline network of roughly 520 to 525 kilometres with storage tanks and pressure boosting systems. The company supplies around 2 million people and industrial operations in Lower Saxony and Bremen with soft drinking water, acting as a wholesale supplier to around 70 cities, municipalities and water associations in the geographic triangle of Göttingen–Wolfsburg–Bremen. Beyond water supply, it engages in flood protection, low-water augmentation, hydropower generation, and is responsible for preserving the Oberharzer Wasserwirtschaft, part of the UNESCO World Heritage.

Harzwasserwerke states that it has been working with the highest commitment for water for over 95 years (elsewhere described as almost 100 years). Its oldest reservoir, the Sösetalsperre, was completed in 1931 and, with its pipeline network, represented the first drinking water transport system in northern Germany. The Eckertalsperre near Bad Harzburg has supplied numerous cities and municipalities in the Goslar, Braunschweig and Wolfsburg area with soft drinking water since 1943. The Innerstetalsperre was built from 1963 to 1966. Due to rising water demand in large parts of Lower Saxony and in Bremen, the Granetalsperre was planned in the 1960s and completed in 1969. The company operates from its headquarters in Hildesheim and 20 further locations in Lower Saxony.
