Haspa Finanzholding

Haspa Finanzholding is a German holding company in the banking sector. According to its official website, it is the sole shareholder (Alleinaktionärin) of Hamburger Sparkasse AG and the parent company (Muttergesellschaft) of numerous other companies within the HASPA Group. The legal entity, which had operated as Hamburger Sparkasse until its banking operations were spun off to a stock corporation, has continued under the name HASPA Finanzholding since 16 June 2003.

The legal entity that today operates as HASPA Finanzholding traces its origins to Hamburg's savings bank tradition. According to the company's history page, a 'Ersparungs-Classe' was established in 1778 as part of the Allgemeine Versorgungsanstalt, on the initiative of the Patriotische Gesellschaft, forming the first savings bank in Germany. On 16 June 1827, Hamburg citizens founded the Hamburger Sparcasse von 1827 on the initiative of Senator Dr. Amandus Augustus Abendroth. On 15 December 1864, minor differences within the directorate of the Hamburger Sparcasse von 1827 over maximum deposit limits led to a split and the founding of the Neue Sparcasse von 1864. After unsuccessful attempts to reunite, new merger negotiations began in 1968, and on 16 June 1972 the two institutes merged into the Hamburger Sparkasse. The Haspa remained a free, public savings bank after the merger, retaining its legal form as a juristic person of old Hamburg law, with no owners and thus not subject to the influence of private owners. On 16 June 2003 — the 176th anniversary of its founding — the entire banking operations of the Haspa were transferred to a newly established stock corporation, Hamburger Sparkasse AG. Following this spin-off, the legal entity continued under the name HASPA Finanzholding, which is the sole shareholder of Hamburger Sparkasse AG and the parent company of numerous other companies in the HASPA Group.
