Overview
Hazorfim (Hebrew: הצורפים, "The Silversmiths") is an Israeli company that designs and crafts artistic silverware, Judaica, and gifts. Founded in 1952 in Tel Aviv by three Jewish silversmiths—Yosef Mardinger, Wilhelm Kerner, and Michael Steinmetz—who had studied together in Chernivtsi, Romania, and survived World War II, the company began as a small workshop and grew into a leading Israeli brand. Since 1983, it has been owned and managed by the Mardinger family, with Yosef's son, Yaakov Mardinger, serving as chief artist and designer. Hazorfim produces over 300 silver items annually, all handmade using traditional techniques. Its product range includes candlesticks, menorahs, kiddush sets, wine fountains, mezuzahs, and other Judaica, as well as tableware and corporate gifts. The company operates 13 retail stores across Israel, a factory and visitor center in Kfar Daniel, and employs over 200 artisans. Its products are sold internationally and are known for their quality, often bearing the "Hazorfim 925" hallmark. Hazorfim combines Eastern and Western influences, blending tradition with modern design, and its pieces are found in private collections of celebrities, businesspeople, and presidents worldwide.
History
The story of Hazorfim begins in the early 1940s in Chernivtsi, Romania, where three Jewish silversmiths—Yosef Mardinger, Wilhelm Kerner, and Michael Steinmetz—studied and practiced their craft together. World War II disrupted their plans, and they fled Romania separately, reuniting only after the establishment of the State of Israel. In 1952, they renewed their partnership in Israel, founding a workshop they called "Hazorfim" (The Silversmiths). Initially operating from a kitchen and later a workshop in Tel Aviv, the company attracted Jewish silversmiths from across the diaspora, each an expert in their field. Together they created new silverware that blended Eastern and Western styles, always handmade using complex traditional techniques. Some of the pieces designed during this period are still among the most sought-after in the company's collection. In 1983, the Mardinger family acquired the shares of the other partners, and the company has remained in their ownership. Yosef's son, Yaakov Mardinger (born 1956), showed exceptional talent from age 13 and grew up in the family's traditional environment. He is now the chief artist and designer, drawing inspiration from classical silversmithing and developing unique techniques. His works range from ornamental Baroque-influenced styles to minimalist modern designs. Over the years, Hazorfim has grown into an international brand, with 13 stores across Israel, a production workshop and design center, and over 200 artisans. The factory store and visitor center are located in Kfar Daniel. The company produces over 300 silver items annually, specializing in artistic silverware, gifts, tableware, candlesticks, and Judaica. Its pieces are found in the private collections of businesspeople, philanthropists, artists, and presidents from many countries.
