Overview

HD Campus TV was a free-to-air high-definition television channel based in Baden-Württemberg, Germany. It operated as a statewide cooperation project among universities and universities of applied sciences, with student editorial teams producing programming about science and studies, teaching and research, student life, lifestyle, and culture. The channel began broadcasting in 2007 and was distributed around the clock in the digital cable network of Unitymedia, with online availability as a livestream and in a media library. The programming covered genres relevant to student life: news, reports, documentaries, magazines, features, portraits, short films, video clips, talk shows, and entertainment formats. Films produced as bachelor's or master's theses, as well as film and journalism seminar projects, expanded the schedule. HD Campus TV described its mission as training, informing, and broadcasting. A central state editorial office coordinated a monthly joint state magazine, moderated in rotation by project partners, and organized regular training sessions in production techniques and current media developments. Local editorial teams at participating universities worked largely independently, sometimes supplying content to private regional TV broadcasters. The channel was the continuation of "HD Hit," which launched in October 2005 as Germany's first HDTV channel. In April 2007, then Minister-President Günther Oettinger gave the starting signal for HD Campus TV. An online media library for student TV productions was published in November 2011, and from September 2015 the project presented multimedia and cross-media productions on the Campus-X-tra platform. Broadcast operations on Unitymedia's digital cable network ceased on 25 April 2017.

History

HD Campus TV emerged from "HD Hit," which began operations in October 2005 as Germany's first HDTV channel. Since 2006, the Landesanstalt für Kommunikation Baden-Württemberg (LFK) supported high-definition television with equipment and personnel subsidies. On 2 April 2007, then Minister-President Günther Oettinger gave the starting signal for the new university channel HD Campus TV, which from then on operated as a joint channel of all participating universities in Baden-Württemberg. The channel was organized as a statewide cooperation project. Local editorial teams at universities and universities of applied sciences produced content during lectures and project studies, while a central state editorial office coordinated the daily program, supported regional editorial teams on technical and content questions, produced the regular HDC MAGAZIN, administered the media library at www.hd-campus.tv, coordinated public relations, and planned training sessions for editorial managers and students in technology and journalism at rotating locations. In November 2011, the online media library for student TV productions was published. From September 2015, HD Campus TV presented multimedia and cross-media productions on the Campus-X-tra platform. Broadcast operations on Unitymedia's digital cable network were discontinued on 25 April 2017. Participating editorial teams included HDC MAGAZIN (state editorial office, University of Freiburg), uniTV Freiburg (Albert-Ludwigs-Universität Freiburg), extraHertz Karlsruhe (Hochschule für Musik Karlsruhe and Hochschule Karlsruhe), CampusTV Tübingen (Universität Tübingen), stufe Stuttgart (Hochschule der Medien Stuttgart), Hochschule Offenburg, GLF Campus TV Furtwangen (Hochschule Furtwangen), HD Campus TV Mannheim (Technische Hochschule Mannheim), Heidelred (Universität Heidelberg and SRH Hochschule Heidelberg), Campus TV Reutlingen (Hochschule Reutlingen), and SRH Hochschule für Wirtschaft und Medien Calw. Because participating institutions differed greatly in study programs and culture, the structures and characteristics of the editorial teams varied considerably, leading to cross-institutional cooperation projects such as Heidelred.
