Hedgehog Conservation Ireland is a self-organised group raising awareness and taking action to help Irish hedgehogs. It supports the pioneering work across Europe of Dr. Sophie Lund Rasmussen, known as 'Dr Hedgehog', who has engaged in multifaceted research on hedgehogs since 2011 and is described as a renowned expert on European hedgehogs. HCI states that securing a healthy future for Irish hedgehogs relies largely on awareness, information and education for the general public. Its activities include raising awareness about problems posed for hedgehogs by cattle grids and gathering data about hedgehog hibernation through a questionnaire. HCI held a launch event for Project Hedgehog, described as creating a conservation strategy for the hedgehogs of Ireland, scheduled for Friday 20th February 2026 at Clontarf Golf Club, Dublin. HCI also hosts regular webinars to keep its community in touch with developments for the establishment of the Conservation Strategy for the Hedgehogs of Ireland.
