Overview
Heinrich Hamker Lebensmittelwerke is a German food manufacturer with its headquarters in Bad Essen-Lintorf. The business was founded in 1907 by Heinrich Hamker as a margarine factory and steam dairy in Lintorf. Over the twentieth century it grew into a supra-regional supplier of margarine, fats, ketchup, sauces, mayonnaise, remoulade, dressings, ready-made dishes and delicatessen salads. Production sites are located in Bad Essen-Lintorf and Rogätz. The company entered the delicatessen market in 1959 and built a second plant in Rogätz, Saxony-Anhalt, in 1991. In 2004 it took over the mayonnaise and sauces divisions of the Belgian Vandemoortele group, including a plant in Herent, Belgium, which made Hamker a leading supplier in the United Kingdom, France and Belgium. The main Lintorf site was expanded into a large dressing plant. In 2007 the family-owned company celebrated its 100th anniversary. In December 2007, 100% of the shares of Heinrich Hamker Lebensmittelwerke were acquired by Heiner Kamps through his International Food Retail Capital Plc. (HK-Food) and merged with Homann Feinkost GmbH of Dissen. Employment in Lintorf fell from more than 500 to 250 jobs. The Belgian sauce plant was sold in 2008 to the Dutch company Van Dijk Food. The firm Heinrich Hamker Lebensmittelwerke GmbH & Co. KG was deleted from the commercial register in October 2009; production and distribution have since been continued by Hamker Vertriebsgesellschaft mbH, affiliated with Homann. HK-Food was bought by the Unternehmensgruppe Theo Müller in 2010. Today Hamker Vertriebsgesellschaft mbH is a German food manufacturer based in Bad Essen-Lintorf, part of the Unternehmensgruppe Theo Müller and integrated into the Homann group. Its product range includes mayonnaise and remoulade, snack sauces, ketchup, barbecue sauces, salad dressings and cooking sauces. In April 2017 it was announced that the Theo Müller group planned to consolidate production from Bad Essen-Lintorf and other Homann group sites into a new plant in Leppersdorf, Saxony, by 2020; on 27 April 2018 the Müller group announced that production at the existing sites would continue.
History
The company was founded in 1907 by Heinrich Hamker as a margarine factory and steam dairy in Lintorf (Hanover). From then on it developed into a supra-regional supplier. During both World Wars production had to be stopped because of the poor raw material situation, but each time a successful new start followed. After the Second World War the machinery and all technical facilities were renewed and extensive new buildings were erected. The company also built up its own vehicle fleet: tank trucks and heavy-duty trucks as well as lighter vehicles (around 100 in total) were available for the ongoing transport of raw materials and finished goods. The vegetable oils needed were mainly obtained from Hamburg oil mills. By around 1960 the plant again employed 130 workers and employees as well as 30 people in the vehicle fleet. In 1959 Hamker entered the delicatessen products market. In 1991 Hamker built a branch plant in Rogätz in Saxony-Anhalt. In 2004 the mayonnaise and sauces divisions were taken over from the Belgian Vandemoortele group, including a plant in Herent, Belgium. Hamker had since become the leading supplier in the United Kingdom, France and Belgium. The main site in Lintorf was expanded into a large dressing plant. In 2007 the previously family-owned company was able to celebrate its 100th anniversary. In December 2007, 100% of the shares of Heinrich Hamker Lebensmittelwerke were acquired by Heiner Kamps through his International Food Retail Capital Plc. (HK-Food) and merged with Homann Feinkost GmbH from Dissen. Of the former more than 500 jobs in Lintorf, only 250 remained. This food company also included the fast-food chain Nordsee and the delicatessen brand Nadler. In 2008 Hamker sold the sauce plant in Belgium to the Dutch company Van Dijk Food. The firm Heinrich Hamker Lebensmittelwerke GmbH & Co. KG was deleted from the commercial register in October 2009; since then production and distribution have been continued by the company Hamker Vertriebsgesellschaft mbH, which is connected with Homann. The parent company HK-Food was bought by the Unternehmensgruppe Theo Müller in 2010. In April 2017 it became known that the Unternehmensgruppe Theo Müller planned to merge production from Bad Essen-Lintorf and other sites of the Homann group into a new plant in Leppersdorf in Saxony by 2020. On 27 April 2018 the Müller Unternehmensgruppe announced that production at the existing sites would now continue after all.
