Overview
Heitkamp Industrial Solutions GmbH is a German construction and plant-engineering company headquartered in Essen. Its roots go back to 1892, when Engelbert Scharpwinkel, known as Heitkamp, founded the "Tiefbaufirma E. Heitkamp" civil-engineering firm. Over the twentieth century the business grew into one of Germany's best-known specialists in power plant construction, cooling towers, industrial buildings, engineering structures and infrastructure. The company was renamed "Bauunternehmung E. Heitkamp GmbH" in 1946 and expanded into special mining, power plant and tunnel construction in the 1950s and 1960s. In 2005 its civil-engineering competences were merged into Heitkamp Ingenieur- und Kraftwerksbau GmbH. Heitkamp built more than 130 power plants in Germany alone up to 2015, including conventional plants, gas-and-steam combined-cycle plants, district-heating and combined heat-and-power plants, DeNOx installations, waste-incineration plants and biomass plants. It was involved in the construction of nearly all German nuclear power plants, including Philippsburg and Emsland, and participated in the Olkiluoto nuclear power plant in Finland, where it built the turbine hall, the pump house and various reactor auxiliary buildings. In cooling-tower construction the company erected more than 100 cooling towers worldwide, in countries including Germany, Switzerland, Belgium, the Netherlands, Spain, Greece, Portugal, Turkey, South Africa, India, Australia, New Zealand and the United States, covering natural-draught, hybrid, cell and fan cooling towers. Notable projects include the world's highest natural-draught cooling tower at Niederaussem (200 m, awarded 1998) and the complete shell construction of the Lippendorf power plant, including two natural-draught cooling towers, in 1995. Ownership changed several times in the 2010s. The Heitkamp Bauholding filed for insolvency in November 2011, and in January 2012 Heitkamp Ingenieur- und Kraftwerksbau GmbH was sold to Zech Bau Holding GmbH, part of the Bremen-based Zech Group. In 2014 the company was acquired by the Renaissance Construction Group, and since then it has belonged mainly to Renaissance Construction AG, Vienna, a subsidiary of the Russian Renaissance Construction, which in turn belongs to the Turkish Rönesans Holding A.S., majority-owned by Turkish businessman Erman Ilıcak. Renaissance Construction AG was renamed Heitkamp Construction GmbH in 2015. At the turn of 2020/21 the company was renamed Heitkamp Industrial Solutions GmbH. Today Heitkamp Industrial Solutions describes itself as part of the Rönesans Group and as a partner for industrial, commercial, public and plant construction, with a focus on structural and civil engineering as well as mechanical and electrical installations. Its service portfolio covers waste-to-energy plants, biomass plants, sewage sludge and sewage treatment plants, water treatment plants, converter stations, peaker stations, storage facilities, combined heating and power (CHP), combined cycle (CCPP), hydrogen production plants, manufacturing plants and industrial buildings. The company markets a "3 Core Competency model" — civil, mechanical and electrical — intended to eliminate the main interfaces between these disciplines. Its management team includes CEO Christopher Hambleton, Managing Director Onur Ulu and Chief Financial Officer Vural Ekinci. Heitkamp positions itself around high-quality project management in industrial construction and around supporting the construction industry's path to CO₂ neutrality.
History
Heitkamp's history begins in 1892, when Engelbert Scharpwinkel, known as Heitkamp, founded the "Tiefbaufirma E. Heitkamp" civil-engineering firm. In 1902 the business was continued by his son Heinrich Heitkamp. In 1946 the firm was renamed "Bauunternehmung E. Heitkamp GmbH", with partners Heinrich Heitkamp senior and his sons Heinrich and Robert. During the 1950s and 1960s the company entered special mining, power plant and tunnel construction, laying the foundation for its later reputation in energy-related civil engineering. In 1995 Heitkamp received its largest single contract at the time: the complete shell construction work, including two natural draught cooling towers, for the new Lippendorf power plant, with a construction volume of 261 million euros. In 1998 the power plant construction company was awarded the contract to build the world's highest natural draught cooling tower at Niederaussem, with a height of 200 metres. In 2005 the civil engineering competences were merged to form "Heitkamp Ingenieur- und Kraftwerksbau GmbH". The 2010s brought major ownership changes. The Heitkamp Bauholding filed for insolvency in November 2011. In January 2012 Heitkamp Ingenieur- und Kraftwerksbau GmbH was sold to Zech Bau Holding GmbH, part of the Zech Group headquartered in Bremen, and the company was integrated into the Zech Bau Group. In 2013 the Renaissance Construction Group acquired Alpine Bau GmbH Hergiswil in Switzerland. In 2014 the Renaissance Construction Group acquired Heitkamp Ingenieur- und Kraftwerksbau GmbH. In 2015 Renaissance Construction AG was renamed Heitkamp Construction GmbH. Since 2014 the company has belonged mainly to Renaissance Construction AG, Vienna, a subsidiary of the Russian Renaissance Construction, which in turn belongs to the Turkish Rönesans Holding A.S., majority-owned by Turkish businessman Erman Ilıcak. In 2019 the business areas were expanded to include industrial plant engineering, creating two business segments: construction and plant engineering. At the turn of 2020/21 the company was renamed from Heitkamp Ingenieur- und Kraftwerksbau GmbH to Heitkamp Industrial Solutions GmbH. In 2021 the change of name was completed, and in 2022 the company celebrated 130 years of Heitkamp. Over its long history Heitkamp built more than 130 power plants in Germany alone up to 2015, including conventional power plants, gas-and-steam combined-cycle plants, district-heating and combined heat-and-power plants, DeNOx installations, waste-incineration plants and biomass plants. It was involved in the construction of nearly all German nuclear power plants, including Philippsburg and Emsland, and participated in the Olkiluoto nuclear power plant in Finland, where it built the turbine hall, the pump house and various reactor auxiliary buildings. In cooling-tower construction the company erected more than 100 cooling towers worldwide, in Germany, Switzerland, Belgium, the Netherlands, Spain, Greece, Portugal, Turkey, South Africa, India, Australia, New Zealand and the United States, covering natural-draught, hybrid, cell and fan cooling towers. Today, as part of the Rönesans Group, Heitkamp Industrial Solutions focuses on industrial, commercial, public and plant construction with structural and civil engineering as well as mechanical and electrical installations.
