History

Help – Hilfe zur Selbsthilfe was founded in 1981 to support Afghan refugees. On 15 July 1981, members of parliament from all parties then represented in the Bundestag as well as figures from science and the church gathered at Frankfurt Airport with the aim of helping the millions of people who had fled following the Soviet military intervention in Afghanistan; together they founded the aid organisation Help – Hilfe zur Selbsthilfe. Today Help is active in more than 20 countries, working to enable people affected by humanitarian crises such as conflicts or natural disasters to lead self-determined lives, with the principle of helping people to help themselves remaining at the centre of its project work.
