Overview

The Henaralmhütte (Henaralm Hut) is an unbewirtschaftete (self-catering, unstaffed) Schutzhütte of the Bad Aussee local group of Naturfreunde Österreich. It is located at 1,596 m above sea level on the Henaralm in the centre of the Totes Gebirge, near the border between Styria and Upper Austria. About ten walking minutes to the north is the Albert-Appel-Haus, a large staffed hut of the Österreichischer Touristenverein. The hut sits on hiking trail 235 from Grundlsee to the Albert-Appel-Haus and near the intersection of many trails through the Totes Gebirge (201, 232, E4 Via Alpina). The high valley in the Henarwald at the edge of the large karst plateau includes, besides the Henaralm, four other alms: Brunnwiesenalm, Breitwiesenalm, Augstwiesalm and Wildenseealm. A prominent nearby formation is the Redende Stein (1,900 m). Owner and operator is the Bad Aussee local group of Naturfreunde Österreich. As part of the Naturfreunde network, the hut is one of more than 700 houses worldwide that range from self-catering huts to Naturfreunde hotels, from seasonal to year-round managed houses, from houses on the sea shore to huts in high mountains. They are described as lively places of encounter, open to all, family-friendly and committed to sustainability, offering socially compatible pricing, hospitality, cosiness, rest and relaxation, good regional cuisine or the possibility of self-catering, and great offers for families and groups. The Naturfreunde movement, founded in 1895, is one of the largest non-governmental organisations worldwide with 350,000 members, and Naturfreunde Internationale (NFI) is the umbrella organisation of around 45 national member organisations and a member of the Green 10.
