Overview

Hentschke Bau GmbH is a German construction company headquartered in Bautzen, Saxony, with additional offices in Berlin, Dresden and Erfurt. Founded in 1857 by master mason Pätzold, the firm has operated under the Hentschke name since 1908, when Max Hentschke acquired the business. Today it is one of the technically sophisticated and regionally formative construction companies of eastern Saxony, combining a long craft tradition with in-house research, modern production facilities and an unusually high level of vertical integration. The company's core competence lies in engineering and reinforced concrete construction. Its portfolio covers road and rail infrastructure, bridge construction, turnkey commercial and social buildings, civil and road engineering, and precast concrete elements. A central formwork workshop at its Bautzen headquarters supports a high degree of in-house manufacturing and flexible project execution. Hentschke Bau performs its core services almost entirely with its own personnel and employs around 700 people. Hentschke Bau operates its own precast concrete plant in Bautzen, established in 2008 with a production area of 20,000 square metres. Under the label "Hentschke idee+" the company bundles its research and development efforts, focusing on new concrete compositions, manufacturing processes and combinations with other materials. Two stated goals are the production of lightweight glass-fibre-reinforced concrete elements and ultra-high-performance concrete. Notable projects include the Military History Museum of the Bundeswehr in Dresden, the Massetal and Füllbachtal bridges, the Waldschlößchenbrücke tunnel in Dresden, the Marburg particle therapy centre and the renovation of the Albertbrücke in Dresden. In 2022 the company's total output was approximately 210 million euros. Hentschke Bau is the main sponsor of the football club FSV Budissa Bautzen. The company has donated to political parties, including the CDU and, in 2017, the AfD. It has also been the subject of controversy: a report by the VVN-BdA and the Else-Frenkel-Brunswik Institute of Leipzig University alleged proximity to the extreme right scene; Hentschke Bau denied the allegations and ultimately won before the German Federal Court of Justice (BGH) after three instances, with the court finding a violation of personality rights.

History

Hentschke Bau traces its origins to 1857, when master mason Pätzold founded a construction business in Bautzen. In 1875, master builder Friedrich August Zimmermann took over the operations. In 1908, Max Hentschke acquired the company and gave it the name it still bears today. After Max Hentschke's death in 1934, the business passed to his son Ernst-Hans Hentschke. In 1972, the company was forcibly nationalised and continued under the name "VEB (K) Wohnungsbau Bautzen". Following the political changes in East Germany, the company was reprivatised in 1990. Under the leadership of the Hentschke family and Dipl.-Ing. Jan J. Schütt, the Hentschke Baugesellschaft mbH & Co. KG was founded. A year later the Hentschke family left the business. In 1992, Hentschke Bau GmbH was established with Dipl.-Ing. Jörg Drews as managing director. In 1999, the company moved its headquarters to Zeppelinstraße in Bautzen. By 2005, its production and logistics areas had been expanded to over 35,000 square metres. In 2007, Dipl.-Ing. Thomas Alscher joined as an additional managing director, and Hentschke acquired an office building in Erfurt. In 2008, the company built its own precast concrete plant in Bautzen-Nord, creating a production area of 20,000 square metres and 35,000 square metres of associated space. Today Hentschke Bau is one of the technically sophisticated and regionally formative construction companies of eastern Saxony. It combines a grown craft tradition with in-house research, modern production facilities and an extraordinary depth of performance. The company operates offices in Berlin, Dresden and Erfurt in addition to its Bautzen headquarters. In 2022, its total output was approximately 210 million euros, and by 2026 it employed around 700 people. Under the label "Hentschke idee+", the company pursues research into new concrete compositions, manufacturing processes and material combinations, with goals including lightweight glass-fibre-reinforced concrete elements and ultra-high-performance concrete.
