Overview

Herdade da Cardeira is a winery in the Alentejo area of Portugal. The Swiss couple Erika and Thomas Meier bought the winery in 2010. Its wines are made in the heart of Portugal, in the Alentejo Province, a region characterized by rolling hills, vast grasslands and ancient cork and olive trees. Vineyard work and harvest are performed exclusively by hand, while processing uses the latest cellar technology; after selection, grapes are fermented in stainless steel tanks or French oak barrels. The product range includes red and white wines, an Espumante, a Grande Reserva, olive oil and a whisky.

History

Herdade da Cardeira is a winery in the Alentejo area of Portugal. The Swiss couple Erika and Thomas Meier bought the winery in 2010, convinced that Alentejo's terroir, consisting of marble, chalk, and schist, combined with dry and hot summer months would produce promising wines. The winery produces intense and fruity red and aromatic white wines. Old meets new at Herdade da Cardeira, where time-honored traditions dating back to the sixth millennium B.C. are combined with today's innovative methods and technology. Work in the vineyards and during the harvest is performed exclusively by hand, but is processed with the latest cellar technology. After meticulous selection, the grapes are placed for fermentation in either stainless steel tanks or French oak barrels.
